I don't know about overheating or anything, but it's worth just letting it sit for a while before doing anything else.
My 360's started freezing on saturday, and when it freezes the screen pixelates. There are no red lights or anything but it happens all the time when watching DVD's and game's so i'm getting concerned now.
Make sure that the patch cables between the console and display are securely connected and are not pinched or damaged......That would be 4 red flashing lights. He said he got the 3 red lights, which means Hardware failure.... I've been lucky with my console! I left it on all day yesterday, seriously for like 16 hours downloading content/movies. Still haven't had any problems.

Maybe a sign or not, honestly I would just watch the behavior of your console and contact Microsoft. My 360 started freezing a lot the last month and on wednesday of last week got up to try paperboy and got the the red lights. Turned off the console, powered it back on with the controller and it worked fine, but it sounded like a power substation so I tried a different arcade game lumines, and it was still noisy, so I decided to try a disc lost planet and soon as I turned the console off/on the friggin red lights appeared and never went away so I am in the process of getting mine serviced.

Nah I've had mine for 14 months and its well ventilated. I think just one too many late night sessions on Gears has killed it :(-James-Isn't there some sort of consumers affairs number you can contact? I don't think "you played it too much" is a valid reason. You certainly shouldn't have to shell out dough for a new system just because you enjoyed the last one and played it!
I loled, you told us the story and then at the very end, stated you played for 5 hours straight, lol. Hmmmmmmm I don't know, you play for 5 hours STRAIGHT and it freezes and you ask us what the problem is??? lolshadow8585uhh...so what if he had watched a long movie? i don't think that's a valid reason for freezing

It just sounds like this is an older 360 and it has finally died. Mine was made on 12/15/05 and is definitely starting to show signs of failing. I don't think the length of time I play has anything to do with it freezing. When Gears launched, my console was on for about 24 hours straight and only froze once. The other day I played for all of 15 minutes and it froze twice.
Idk but my 360 freezes if I hit the guide button during a like transaction in the menus. Say I press single player and than the guide buttonright away, it will freeze.Elementguy13

Yes, there is, watchdog (I can tell you are in the UK) are eager to hear from people having the 'ring of death' on their 360s and will provide information stating what your rights are etc. give them a call. You may even end up on TV. ;)
Who knows, you might see me on TV :DI recieved an X Box 360 console as a christmas present for Christmas 2005. It was the core console, and it worked fine for the best part of 3 months. After this original 3 month period it broke down, and having contacted Microsoft they told me to send it in for repair. Having recieved the console back, it worked fine again until mid February. Panicking, I obviously rang realising that my console is out of warranty. I ring the company, and despite the numerous problems they have had with 3 Red Lights, they say that because the console is out of warranty they offer to repair it for the cost of £83! I know its not a lot of money, and it seems reasonable. Until they tell you they will only give 3 months warranty on that repair. To me it seems ridiculous, as what guarantee do I have that after this 3 months the console won't break down again and I'll be hit with another £83 charge. Surely for such a fee they would offer a longer warranty? (Possibly 12 months)?
