I thought I would do something to help people pick what is the right cable for them. So I dragged out my big wooden TV stand and put them to the test. As a plus... I added "Game Mode" shots. For people wondering what game mode does on TVs that have it.

Don't mind the shots... I did my best in a pitch black room and with a crappy view finder.

Component - Game mode. (720p)

Component - Regular mode. (720p)

VGA - Game mode (1360 x 768 )

VGA - Regular mode (1360 x 768 )

Component - Game mode (720p)

Component - Regular mode (720p)

VGA - Game mode (1360 x 768 )

VGA - Regular mode (1360 x 768 )

Personally I would have to go with VGA... With game mode off. The shots don't show how bad the corners of things are displayed when using component over VGA. You will notice a clearer and brighter picture with VGA.

Game mode works best with component. It gives a smoother and brighter picture... Then with out using it with component.

Let me know what you think.

Look at the component gears head and gun then look at the VGA shots of the gears guy. Notice how much brighter it is?

Thats what game mode does. It is to lighten up darker areas. Component is naturally darker. My TV is already set up for optimal viewing.

My TV is an LCD Samsung model LN-S3296D if anyone wants to look it up.

P.S.

Also notice the rainbow effect on the component non-game mode screens. Then look what game mode did (removed it). VGA doesn't have that issue.

It seems to me the vga signal looks a little washed out. The component seems to have deeper color. I switched from component to vga on my samsung but seemed to lose a lot of sharpness and the colors are more washed out.

Yes VGA is bright. Component gives really deep rich colors... In a well lit area thats ok... But when you head into a dark area... Deer lord I can't see that far infront of me.

It's the oposite on my Samsung. I lose quility if I don't use VGA. I never got to try out my HDMI yet.

Yeah, I can see what your saying. But it's because of the shadows. There more defined and thus makes the colors and detail stick out more

I can understand what you are saying, but your pictures have convinced me to go back to component. I notice much more definition and detail in the wall and also the statue shows much more definition and detail on component. It just boils down to personal preferance I guess.

Your right, the shadows are much more defined and that is what adds the extra detail, but I can see where in darker areas it would be tough to see without constantly adjusting your brightness levels, its kind of a trade off.

Glad I could help you choose. :) I have my old Xbox plugged into the component jack now. My Xbox for some reason displays everything brighter then my 360 did using component. I don't know.

Well, I know this varies from TV to TV, but I will stick with Component. It looks awesome and still does not warrant dishing out $40 for teh VGA cables for a bit btghter image. They all look good to me.

Sorry but the pics make Component look like the clear winner. I would say that in reality VGA should be slightly better but the PICS u have show otherwise.

I can look at the pics and see that the component shows more detail and more realistic color definition and the VGA is more blended.

That is just my thoughts

Yeah, I agree. TV to TV it's different. I would have liked a CRT HDTV because it can display blacks better. But the warping issue is what kept me away.

Alot of people have LCD's and this is a good way to see how to get a brighter picture or a darker more defined picture on one.

Yeah, my camera is only 2 mega pixels... Plus I had to compress the image some... From 500 KB to just 120 or so KB. Helps my 56k upload them quicker.

Plus photobucket decreases the size to fit 17" monitor... Which is 1024 x 768. Normal size on pictures are 1632 x 1232.

The pictures don't show alot of things. But they do show the contrasting differences really well.

The crazy thing is people on gamespot spend hours upon hours arguing over the difference in those pictures. They look similar to me. Sure there are a few differences but not enough to make a big deal out of.

depends on what you have your vga connected to... if its a tv then im sure the component cables would look much better but what about on a monitor? like one with a 1000 x 1 contrast and a 1680 x 1050

I have a Samsung 32"" HDTV and i find the VGA cable to offer a sharper picture and more real colours than the component.

Component seems slightly less sharp and colours seem over the top. (yes i have tried adjustments) i jus prefer VGA.

Im hoping HDMI on my PS3 when i pick it up will look just as sharp.

Ditto...

Let me know how PS3 goes with HDMI. I never got to use my HDMI yet. I wanna know if there is any difference between HDMI and VGA. They should look the same just about?

I was so happy to finally get a nice hdtv so I could stop using the horrible vga cables. I just can't stand the washeds out colors. It makes games look like they're using a 200/1 contrast ratio. Darks are supposed to be dark. With vga you just can't get a nice dark, and yes, I tried countless settings.

No disrespect to the topic creator, but those pics are worthless on telling the difference between the two. They are pictures of a picture, that was taken with a digital camera, compress and resolution is adjusted, then uploaded and now are being viewed on all different types of monitors. Heck the website we are viewing it on now is probibly resizeing and adjusting them. The value of your write up is your opinion that VGA is sharper, cause you have compaired it yourself.

I think the difference between the two would be a lot more pronounced on a larger T.V. I have a 61" Samsung 1080P and can tell you that the VGA cable was definitely an upgrade for me over the componant at that size.

Game Mode is a function available on Samsung HDTV's. It is nothing special... it just allows you to adjust and save custom settings for picture and sound (color, contrast, brightness, sharpness, bass, treble, etc...) This way you can have one mode of settings only for your HD console. For instance the settings I use for regular TV are different than the settings I use for my xbox. Instead of having to manually adjust them every time I switch back and forth, when I turn on my 360 I press the PC button which changes the TV to my 360 (VGA cables), the HDTV automatically enters game mode which changes my settings to "custom". When I press the TV button... it changes back to dynamic mode which is optimized for TV. I hope that makes sense.

Some LCDs are not good for gaming especially when using component. It will probably be best to connect them with VGA and I think they give the worst picture quality especially those PC type LCDs. I think the highest with component will be 720P 1024 x 768.

The component on game mode looks the best, but these are still shots, so it doesn't really show how well VGA vs. Component handles movement.

There are times where I prefer my VGA cables over my component because the VGA is definitely brighter but I do like my 32' HDTV.  My HDTV has a lot better picture but it is sort of dark (especially red.)

You know... People who say my TV is to dark. It is not. I have it set correctly. My original Xbox with component cables looks brighter then my 360 using component cables. Same goes with my DVD player.

For some reason 360 displays an unusually dark picture trough component.

The reason at a distance component seems to make things pop is because of the darker blacks that are being displayed make all the detail pop.

In person VGA is really not that washed out. It's very well balanced.

Funny, after calibrating my tv to look good using the 360, my image is nowhere near as bad as yours. Also, it's nice you dwell on the one part of the image that makes vga look better at YOUR settings. Seems to me the backgrounds look far better in your screenshots through component

Component without gamemode looks much better on my Samsung.
