Is the wash out on the VGA cable really that noticable on 1080p? I know HDMI is better but unless they are right next to each other is it that noticable?

I use VGA and it looks better than component IMO. The only HDMI device I have connected to the tv is the PS3 running at 1080p and I can't really tell the difference (might be the tv though).

My friend has the same problem. In fact, he gave me his VGA cable free of charge because his 360 looked so bad on VGA. Mine, howeer, looks spectacular. I believe it has something to do with what T.V. you have. Some can handle the VGA and others cannot.

1) there is not that much of a difference between the VGA and the HDMI image quality ..... 2) the cable looks washed out (or not) dependently on what is the native mHz of your TV. If the frequency of the 360's VGA is within the limits of your TV - then the image will look good, otherwise the image will look washed and the black-level balance will be skewed. I believe that the 360's mHz is 44.2/44.5 - however, that again depends on if you use the original cable or not. I managed to bring my TV, which works best with signals in the 23-30 mHz range, to accept a higher value mHz after tempering with the TV (which you shouldn't do unless you know how-to). Madcatz cable, which I also tried out, has a lower mHz level and hence might look better on some TVs - but again it has a distorted color balance in its native setting, which, in my opinion, is very annoying.

Correct, basically all consoles (except for dreamcast) have analog vga in component or svideo. You get washed out colors converted. Thats why theres HDMI instead of vga nowadays. Unless on dreamcast, the vga signal converted or put in will be different in hdmi.
