I am buying my first console and I chose to get the Xbox 360. I am looking into getting the 60bg pro. The one thing I am worried about is getting a system that has the falcon chipset instead of a system with the Jasper chipset. I am not planning on buying another system anytime soon so I want to be sure that I am getting the best system I can afford. So my question is are there 60gb Jaspers floating around or are they going to be falcons? Also, is the difference in the two even worth waiting for? thanks

Don't wait cause there's probably a 2% chance of getting a jasper. Plus if you do get RRoD you have a 3 year warranty against it so you just send it in and get a new one back. People need to remember that. Also the Falcon chip is a very good chip, it doesn't have as high of a chance to get it then the earlier models.

Dude, when you buy the system you are covered for RROD. I bought for $50 the 2 year no questions service plan. Any other problem that can come up, is covered under this plan. It's worth it for the stress relief.

Q: How does one tell the two apart, short of opening the case?

You can tell the difference by the manufacturing date, lot number, volts, and watts on the power brick.

Jasper

Date = 10-23-08 and up

Lot # = 843x

Volts = 12.1 ( I believe)

Power brick = 150 watts

Hmm... then it looks like the new 360 I bought for my Dad is a falcon (the manufacturing date is 7-10-08, and the wattage on the power supply says 175). Well that should be alright, so long as he doesn't open this 360 up like his last one.

If your xbox dies you can send it into microsoft for free, they now have a 3 year warranty for RROD and 1 year for everything else, sp you won't have to pay for a new console, in fact you won't have to pay for anything really except it takes about 3 weeks to a month to send it in, have it repaired and sent back to you. But try not to worry about RROD unless it happens, just have fun with your new xbox.

BTW does anyone know why they don't put the jasper chip in all new 360 consoles if it's so great? I've heard it makes your 360 run slower, but it significantly lowers your chances of getting RROD. But if the Jasper made the 360 that much slower why would people want it so much???

Engadget and Joystiq keep good track of this stuff (their site's more geared for it), just search Jasper. As far as I know, they're shipping in Arcade systems right now, and they have a few posts with pics on how to recognize them.

The probably are putting it in all consoles being produced at this point. However the manufacturing date on my aformentioned console, which was purchased online just a few days ago, would suggest that they're still clearing out their old stock.

Most of the Jaspers are arcades, I work at Best Buy and I know we got them. I actually am getting one because my refurbished broke (GPU went out).

Any differences on the box art??? Many of the new Holiday bundles, specifically the units that weren't repackaged on-site at retailers have the system positioned inside the box so that you can't read the lot number from the outside hole of the box.
