Mostly looking for advice and ideas here. Obviously there's nothing you can do to prevent the three red lights, but lets list some ways to prevent overheating, damage, and the like. I've got mine sitting on a metal mesh rack that has it raised a foot off the carpet. This provides great ventillation to prevent overheating. The power block is sitting next to the console (but not touching) on the rack as well. Raising the console and power block off the ground also help prevent anyone stepping on it or something like that. I have a small fan (not connected to the console, sitting about two feet away) blowing on the back of the xbox. Is that fan a good idea or will it end up blowing tons of dust into the console?

I don't know if its good to have the fan blowing in from the back...there are vent holls back there and you may just be blowing air back in when its suppose to come out (but who knows). Just don't play it for sessions extending several hours at a time is my advice. Seems everything else you've got covered.

i wouldnt point a fan towards the air hole, mostly because you could just be pumping in air, while the system tries to push out air
but yea, basically what i do is keep it in a ventialated and shaded place
i also keep it horizontal, as it seems to me the console is less likely to scratch discs that way
and thats all i know and do

I have had my 360 since Dec. 2005, but I guess I'm just lucky. I've always kept mine horizontal as the vertical orientation places the largest air vent on the bottom. It's designed to vent heat out the back so your fan orientation sounds counter-productive. Have a fan blowing on the large vent on the right side (horizontal) to aid air flow through the system. I'm no engineer so I have no idea if this will help. I think there's just a basic design flaw internally that causes the overheating.

I just keep it in an open area where in can get some decent air circulation and refrain from dropping it.

I was thinking about gettinga little fan so it wouldnt overheat but I was thinking the same thing that it might not be good to blow the air back in. Do they have little fans or heatsinks or whatever there called that you can actually put in the xbox?

My 360 is a year and a half-old, not a single problem. I make sure all sides of the machine have room to breathe, and I usually don't play for more than 2 hours at a time, or leave the machine on while I do other things. I thinkalot of it it luck- just the way your particular machine is configured. But those tips won't hurt. And you can also buy yours fromBest Buy, pay $50 for a 2 year replacement warranty, and not stress about it.

amroe333

yes get an intercooler, but make sure you get the updated model. It's called Nyko Intercooler EX and comes in a box. They have the metal power supply housing and will not have melt issues. I've had them on my 360's for over 1 year with no problems and they keep the system cool. Power consumption from the system is small.

Keep the system in a open space and not inside a cabinet. I bought four 4" fans from Target for $5 ea. to blow in all side vents to keep the system cool.

If you're serious about keeping your console cool, then take a GEL ICEPACK, and put a paper towel or two, between the Pack and the console and just let it sit on the console. I've never tried it but it theoretically could work. You just have to be careful about CONDENSATION BUILDUP. Or even better Put the pack on the bottom, and set the 360 ontop of it, since that's where all the processors etc. are attached to

I've read on the forums that someone opened one up and found it had an extra heat pipe (laptop technology) to deal with the overheating issues. I haven't had time to corroborate this or find any links but it might be worth researching.

Here's another tip: Plug your 360 either directly into a wall socket or a UPS. It seems to me that the 360 is sensitive to power surges. Also, a clean power supply has never hurt any expensive electronic investment. I have a UPS and since launch i've had my 360 plugged into my UPS the entire time and I haven't had any major problems. I have, however, experienced the two red rings. I was on a marathon session with Bioshock and into my 4th hour, my 360 crashed and I had to let it cool down. It also didn't help that in California a few weeks ago the temperature reached 100 degrees for 10 consecutive days.

Tell me about it. Microsoft better do a lot more research by the time they roll around with their next system. If it plauged with problems like the 360 is, I just might have to reconsider my alternatives.
