Halo 3 is multiplayer king(16 player max). Call of Duty 4(16 player max) and Call of Duty World at War(18 player max) are also great and in the top 3 most played on LIVE.Gears of War is also alot of fun, but the secound one's multiplayer is broken. Frontlines Fuel of War is an average game but supports up to 50 online.
if you play with friends, orange box (team fortress 2) is a MUST. team fortress two is just the best multiplayer game. its fun, different, and strategic. the reason i say if you play with friends is because it requires teamwork, and only then will you get the best experience from it. however its still great, even if you dont play with mates online. gears 2, another great game. its great to play with or without friends. cod4 is a really good game, however i find that it lacks teamwork, therefore playing it with friends isnt that much better. left 4 dead. awesome game with or without friends, yet it is sooo much better with friends.

As far as "friends" go, all I can say is thank gawd for the party system or I wouldnt experience any teamwork at all. Halo3 is unmatched for it's MP with CoD4 coming in a close second. The fact that it rewards you for staying alive pretty much makes up for the extreme lack of teamwork online.
