What are the " Gears" of war exactly?

No "Gears" geat their name becuause the "good" guys represent the Coalition of Ordered Government or COG.  COG can mean the same thing as Gears so that's why the soldiers are called Gears.  This is part of the inspiration behind the game's name as well as what the poster above me said.

:lol:... I smell a funnay. But if you're serious, then yeah, it's both a reference to the COG and just a phrase about war.
