Gamespot loaded up my new gamertag in my profile but what does the G stand for it in? Is that like how many games I've played or such?

That's where your Gamerscore should go. It has a zero there now. Did you just get your 360? If not, that's a cause for concern (unless you don't care at all about achievements, which has been the topic of the week on this forum).

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, I just got my 360. So you get points for having done achievements then? Is that why people keep asking for games that can give them achievements quickly?

Yes a lot of people want their Gamerscore to go up a lot. Others like myself don't really care about them. Although they add replay to some games which is why many people love achievements.

Here's more information than you might want to know...

All 360 games you buy (like Halo), can earn you up to 1,000 in them. Games you download off Xbox Live (like Uno) are worth up to 200 points. Some games have additional downloadable content (like Oblivion) that can add up to 250 points on top of the 1,000.

Gamerscores are very nebulous, for the following reasons...

  • Games differ dramatically in how easy or hard it is to get all 1,000 points. A typical game that you play through on the "normal" difficulty will get you about 300 points. (I pulled that out of my ***, so others feel free to comment.) Some games, like Far Cry, are extremely stingy with points. Some games, like Madden NFL 2006, are extremely generous with points.
  • Most games have a split of about 75%/25% of points you earn offline/online, although there are obviously exceptions for games that have no online mode. Even still, all of Call of Duty 4's points are earned offline, even though it's a very multiplayer-oriented game.
  • Complicating this is the fact that some games are split between easy points and hard points. Quake IV has a number of points you earn just for playing through the game or playing a relatively small number of multiplayer matches. Then it has an achievement "Be number 1 on the All Gametypes ladder," which is basically saying, "The only way you'll ever get this achievement is if you are ranked number one in the world."
  • Knowing the above, with few exceptions, it is much easier to get 250/1000 in four different games, than it is to get 1000/1000.

And thus ends my commentary on Gamerpoints. ;)

Thanks for breaking that down for me. I don't see myself going after massive amounts of points. I mean, do you get anything for having these points? If its just for bragging then I sure won't kill myself trying to get them.

Just bragging. Some achievements are worth bragging about if you're able to get them. I've heard that about COD4's Mile High Club. I can't think of any achievements I've gotten that were especially difficult so do not really care for them. I heard MS had been considering allowing gamers the ability to trade them in for some points but that's not going to happen unfortunately.

They're for putting in your signature block, and once it's high, it does the bragging automatically. Auto-brag.

As an addendum to all my above stuff:

  • A Gamerscore under 5,000 is not a lot, and is very common.
  • A Gamerscore between 5,000 and 20,000 is in the marginal-to-decent bracket, and also common. I'd say (completely unscientifically) that most 360 users fall in this group.
  • Gamerscores over 20,000 indicate a great deal of playing time, and are less common.
  • Gamerscores over 30,000 are quite rare.
  • Gamerscores over 50,000 are exceedingly rare.

The highest I have personally seen is 60,000-some, belonging to someone on this forum (or was it xbox360achievments.org?...hmm...). There are scores over 100,000, though I have never seen any of these people. What's the highest score on record, anyone?

Don't forget the all important:

* The higher the Gamerscore the more women you are nailing.

God, I keep going here. Gamerscores aren't solely for bragging. They also prove you've played a game or done certain things.

Say someone's here on Gamespot, spouting this or that about Gears of War. They've got they're Gamertag attached to their GameSpot profile. You check them out on Xbox.com, and Gears of War doesn't even show up. You can call bull**** on them.

Example 2: Someone says it's easy to beat Halo 3 on Heroic with the Iron Skull. You check them out, and they've only beaten it on Normal, and they don't even have the Iron Skull. Again, you can call them out.

Both of these actually happenned. Naturally, the accused came up with some silliness, like they did it on a friend's name or whatever. Bleh. Most people know a bull****** when they see one.

So you can look up people's list of achievements? That might be kinda cool.

....it should also be noted that while you may not think you care now, after they start accruing you may find yourself doing things that you wouldn't do other wise in a game just to get the achievement...this is the best thing about achievement points. Maybe you won't, but I didn't care initially but your score starts going up and all of a sudden you think hmm...just a couple more to x-thousand or whatever, or you want to have a reason to keep playing a game that you're really already done with.

Yup, I've seen Palantas description of that happen before too. Just yesterday there was this tool on here claiming he was an absolute GOD at Halo 3, COD4, GH3, and Gears 1 and that he can smoke anyone along with embarrass them in the process. Someone found his tag, saw he only has 30 achievement points in Gears 1 for the beginning of the game and posted that in the thread. Never heard from him again. Pretty funny though.

To answer Palantas' previous question as to who has the highest GS:

blinkandgone has the highest amount with 277,224 BUT he has used cheats, game saves, profile swapping, etc
Stallion83 has the highest LEGIT amount with 214,155
