Dont listen to ^. These are games that will last you for a long time, you wont regret it. You dont want to buy a game then lose money by trading it back in.
Shooters.
Gears of War has a great storyline with great online play
Rainbow Six: Vegas is also great with an RPG factor of leveling up and unlocking gear in multiplayer, great storyline.
Dont get the Darkness, it may not last you that long.
RPGS
Oblivion if you like first person hack and slash. plenty of downloads for expansion quests.
GTA-like Games
Saints Row, although you may want to wait for GTA4.
Anything else your gonna have to see for yourself, because i cant really tell you what to get unless you know what you want.
