If there is an upgrade to the 360 unit, what happens to us loyal current owners? Do we get some kind of trade in or anything?

I know no one knows, but what do you guys think is fair for us?

If it's faster or anything like that, it should at least be more expensive.

No way we're gonna be able to trade ours inn, cause that's like 10mill units

You guys are delusional if you think there's going to be a "trade in" program or something. They'll probably offer a bigger hard drive seperately in stores soon if you want to buy one, get over it already. You act like this is the only product that has gone under an overhaul in mid-production. It happens all the time.

The rest of us, who've been lucky to have one for the past while, continue to play on the same machines. A new die is part of the normal evolution of a console over its lifetime. For one, I'd much rather have the white box and been playing as long as I have, than wait until the middle of 2007 to get the machine in the first place.

Edit:  link to a story about codename:zephyr here .

What they did is create an even better upgrade of the system, I seriously doubt they will trade a 20 GB xbox with no HDMI port with a "limited quantity" 120 GB HDMI version for free...thats illogical, but you can upgrade to a 120 GB hard drive for about $179.99(they said "Less than $200" which means about its probably going to be $180), and I'm sure there will eventually be technology to connect a normal Xbox 360 with an HDMI device. Thats my opinion...

Hardware is constantly updated, revised and generally made better. It would be tough for a company to try to somehow compensate those customers that adopted the earlier version of a particular product. As it is, this "elite" version of the 360 is a limited quantity one, so a trade in isn't an option. You're more than welcome to sell your current 360 and buy a new one. New 360 buyers can choose between any of the 3 options..additionally, there is talk that eventually some of the functionality of the "elite" version (like HDMI) will be part of the regular "premium" version.. If you have a 360 and are happy with it right now, then why fret?

I'm a complete 360 addict, so I'd describe myself as a loyal customer.

But in all truth, they have no obligation to us concerning the revised console. I mean, when Sony revised the PS2, nobody who owned the original one got any special treatment.

It'd be like buying a 2007 Mustang, then taking it back the next year and demanding a fair exchange for the 2008 model. You get what you pay for, when you paid for it.

Saying that, I reckon some places will do a bumped up trade in offer for your old 360 towards the black one. Gamestop will probably offer $250 trade in instead of $180, stuff like that.

It really isn't a big deal. In fact this might not be the same but I had I think a launch Xbox (original Xbox) and when I got Ninja Gaiden, I had to send my Xbox in to get upgraded so it can play Ninja Gaiden because my launch one wasn't powerful enough to play a really powerful game such as Ninja Gaiden. So late into the future you might be able to send in your 360 for an upgrade if any game uses advantages that the 360 might not be able to take.

I can see this from both sides but I do agree the loyal customers should get atleast a discount on the new hard drive but not a free one when the revised playstations came out it's ability as a games console hadnt changed but this introduction of a new hard drive does change alot now with this current gen of consoles just be cause they aim more at the multi-media side they dont make the games the priority they encourage us to save demos, music, and movies and the 20 gig is alot of work keeping room available its is now completely different to other consoles in the past that just got smaller but didnt change the experience.

I honestly I really don't think it matters all that much. I am sure some people will buy a new black 360 just because it is the newest thing, but I really don't care either way. Being said though, I am interested in if the controllers will be black because I have only one right now and a new black one would be cool.

I agree with this - although I am unsure what retailers will do, I suspect ZERO. I know I will buy the 120GB HD as soon as I need larger capacity. So far I am doing fine. What people need to understand is that no matter what system you have you can't have everything all the time. Kind of like the PS3 not having any games - doh!

Try to be more polite, chief.

If you think the Zephyr is going to make your 360 "second rate", then go on thinking that. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, irrespective of how wildly inaccurate said opinion might be.

Don't worry about it.  All it has is HDMI, bigger hardrive and smaller CPU.  It changes nothing about how the games.  We will still get to play the same games.  You people are taking this way out of proportion.

I was thinking about selling my 360 now to get the new one when it comes out, but from some stories shows us that it will be a while till it's out and will cost a bit. I don't use much of my HDD, which is actually only 12GB if you remember, nor own an HDTV so maybe I shouldn't really care. Though it does look cool.

Agree, I think paying $80-$100 for an upgraded HDD for current owners would be reasonable for MS and would be good PR to avoid making 10 million current owners mad. Just look at the memory card...they came out with a bigger card and sold it at around the price the smaller card was at and lowered the price of the old one. Seems pretty reasonable to do that with the HDD, especially since I can buy a retail 120GB Notebook HDD for less than $80. Will they do this? Probably not, but I think if they want to keep beating the PS3, it would be a smart idea not to make a significant portion of your current audience mad.

12GB? ...no...

It's a 20GB HDD. When the console was first released, it had a 4GB partition, leaving 16GB free.

That was changed to a 3GB partition in one of the Dashboard updates, leaving 17GB free.

If you've only got 12, it's because you have stuff saved on it.

Yeah, but regardless eventually you will have to buy a new hard drive. And what happens to all your saves, arcade games, etc.. To load a different game, I'll have to change hard drives? I hope MS has a solution for this. And I'll be really pissed if in a year they come out with true 1080p console.

You don't hear PC gamers complain about the fact that they buy a high-end vid card and 5 months later a new high-end video card comes out and so on...You'd be entitled to complain if the 'new' 360 will have a faster CPU or more memory, or a faster and more advanced graphics chip. How many 360 owners have 1080p TVs? If you think that your 360 is not worth it anymore, sell it(as in give it to someone who appreciates it more) and buy the new one. Problem solved...

A bit off-topic, but from my understanding, I've read somewhere that someone form Sony said that 256MB of video ram is enough for now...I wonder what's going to happen when 256MB won't cut it. Sony will release a newer model with at least 384MB of video ram. It'll be huge news. That is bound to worry someone in the real meaning of the word...not this tiny upgrade to the 360.

Be men and take it! (to those of you who worry too much for your own good)

Calm down, it's just a new version of the 360, like the slimline ps2. It won't affect us in any way. We'll even be able to buy the new 120 gig HD separately if we want to.

Do you ask Dell to give you a new computer everytime they come out with a new processor or something? I guess no. Then why do you ask the same about a videogame console?

I think they'll look sweet as heck.

iPod white is not the new black. Pink is not the new black. [Insert current fashionable color here] is not the new black.

Black is always the new black.

The PS3 will also get 65nm processors eventually. I don't see them crying about that. It's just a way to reduce heat problems, and cut costs. Well thankfully i haven't purchased my 360 yet, but i will once the price of the Zephyr becomes reasonable.

Um, no, no trade ins. You've never gotten a trade in for a better iPod, or a better TV, or a better car, don't expect one now. Honestly, you and the vast majority of 360 owners out there don't really need, in any way, the new 360 that *might* come out. Do you have an HDMI capable TV and surround sound system? Probably not (not saying you don't, but you probably don't since that's not very common at all). Do you download lots of movies and TV shows where you would definitely need more space than you already have? Probably not. The new 360 is really for high end users, very high end users who can put the new features to use. Otherwise its just a black 360 to you. If you want a black 360 you can skin it or send it to a special spraypainting place that will do it for you.

What? Say again? The 360 is just as capable as the PS3 at outputting 1080p, so what do you mean by a "true 1080p console." Its true that 1080p is not the native resolution, but that's because few games will ever be made native to that resolution, its just too much extra work. For most of us 720p is the most we need. Regardless, the 360 can and does do "true" 1080p.

I don't understand what is going on. I really don't understand anything about this new thing called the Zepher or whatever. What does it supposd to do exactly? I am very pleased with my current xbox 360m so if this new 360 comes out what does it do exactly besides be BLACK? Does it play newer 360 games that your current 360 cant or what? And also about the hardrive, well thats not a big deal for me because I usually delete my videos and demos after a month or so or when I just get bored watching them and stuff. So will someone please explain to me what this New Zephyer really does.

Breath in. And breath out. Doesn't that feel better?

There is no reason to get carried away by this uncomfirmed updated 360 (codenamed Zephyr). This happens all the time, especially in the world of technology. There is obviously a demand from us consumers for this product and Microsoft is listening and giving us what we want. That sounds like good consumer loyalty to me. They are simply making the hardware more reliable and easier to manufacture. But to fully understand the concept of upgrading, let us look at the definition itself:

Taken from www.dictionary.com

1.an incline going up in the direction of movement.
2.an increase or improvement.
3.a new version, improved model, etc.
4.an increase or improvement in one's service, accommodations, privileges, or the like.
5.something, as a piece of equipment, that serves to improve or enhance.

Well, I don't know about you, but I see the word improvement a lot. I consider that to be a good thing. But wait! This is nothing new because we constantly make improvments everyday of our lives, so don't act like this concept is something new.

Also, why bother buying a 360 in the first place? Because eventually another generation console will come out. Why buy a PS1 when PS2, PS3, PS4.... will come out? I bought my 360 for the games and as far as I can tell "Zephyr" and my normal Xbox 360 both play the same games. Right now i don't need a bigger hard drive, but when and if I need one I'll be glad that a biiger one is out. I'm also very grateful that Microsoft extended te warranty to 1 year because if my 360 breaks, then I can simply get a new one. The new processor will probably be put in the normal 360 as well. So, for those of you who are saying "I hate this and Microsoft", I say shutup! You paid for a 360 and got exactly what you paid for.

Agreed. An improvement would be great. When consoles first come out there are always problems. It should almost be expected.

What? Say again? The 360 is just as capable as the PS3 at outputting 1080p, so what do you mean by a "true 1080p console." Its true that 1080p is not the native resolution, but that's because few games will ever be made native to that resolution, its just too much extra work. For most of us 720p is the most we need. Regardless, the 360 can and does do "true" 1080p.

you're right... 360 can output 1080p just as easily as PS3. in fact virtua tennis 3 is native 1080p, so yeah.

Don't get me wrong I agree that the 360 can output 1080p and for that reason it is "capable". But some 1080p owners that aren't able to receive 1080p over anything but HDMI are left in the cold so to speak. HDMI just puts all people at ease.

Yeah, but regardless eventually you will have to buy a new hard drive. And what happens to all your saves, arcade games, etc.. To load a different game, I'll have to change hard drives? I hope MS has a solution for this. And I'll be really pissed if in a year they come out with true 1080p console.

Actually there is a solution to this, the 120 gig hd will include a cord that allows you to download from another 360 hd so you will be able to move all of your saves, etc. over. Also, it won't just be the system in black, just about every 360 accessory out there right now will also be released in black separately, so if you just want a black controller you will be able to buy them.
