Hopefully they will NOT go in that direction. But more importantly is that they don't rush through the production and release of the game like they did with Halo 2. If they are smart they will take there time and release the game when it is truly polished up and ready to be released like they did with Halo 3.

, its nothing special either, just a different looking character with no special abilities, kind of lazy imo.
I found the Arbiter STORY immensly interesting, but the gameplay and levels for him boring and dull. Vice Versa for the Master Chief (though I didn't find the story bad, but somewhat dissappointing).
I'd prefer Gears 2 did two seperate campaigns, like Resistance 2 is doing. Rather than Halo 2 which mashed them together.
I just hope they really go over the top when it comes to stepping up their game. So many first person shooters have come out since Gears of War. The novelty of the Unreal 3 engine has long worn off, the standards are now set way up in the stratosphere, and the general consensus will basically devlolve into "if it ain't better than Call of Duty 4, it will be the most cataclysmic disappointment since the mid-90's Theatrical re-release of the Star Wars trilogy." Epic has a major order to fill, and unfortunately, not nearly as much time as they had before to do it.
I just hope they observe the trends and new gameplay mechanics that have been instated recently. Because from the video I saw from the last GDC, there's only one new feature. You can now chainsaw people UPWARD instead of DOWNWARD. Call me a cowardly arbiter of low-faith if thine initial impulses demand you do so. But from a very honest perspective, I've not been given ANY sort of content worth getting excited over. Very likely this will change, but it's just my feeling.
So to answer your question, no, I don't think they'll pull a Halo 2. This is because I've been given no reason to even think that they will. Really, there's hardly enough content about Gears 2 that even warrants any sort of "what-if's."

My only quams with Halo 3 was that it wasnt much different from Halo 2 and it didnt support 720p and up. :( If it did those two things right, H3 would have been a lot better.

Umm. Gears of War didnt run on Unreal 3 engine. Gears of War 2 will be running on U3 engine. And we have yet to see it in action. If i'm stating this correctly. Call of Duty 4 isnt the best looking game around. I could name a few that easily topped COD4 when it came to graphics. Gears of War for one, BioShock, Uncharted (even though it's on PS3). Call of Duty 4 provided realism and awesome gameplay, but it doesnt look that great. I guess some people here haven't played Gears of War, and they haven't checked out the Gears of War 2 tech demo. Call of Duty 4 is overhyped imo. The multiplayer is great and it gives you tons of replayability but it eventually gets old, and the campaign was short lived with a weak storyline. Granted, Gears of War didnt have much of a storyline either but it's still one of the best looking games around, with awesome gameplay. For a game that came out more than a year ago, I have yet to see a game even come near Gears of War. Maybe BioShock and Uncharted but that's it. So really, I dont know what you're talking about when it comes to "if it aint better than Call of Duty 4." Who died and made COD4 God? There were games on the NES, SNES, N64, and PS1 and PS2 that were so much better, even in those times. Games arent what they use to be, at least not all games. Some do a great job at capturing what gaming is suppose to be. While some others are just cash-in titles. I think Epic has done very well for themselves. They definitely set the standard for Xbox 360 games and you cant sit here and tell me they half-assed themselves in the studios. Look at the game and tell me that. Can you do better?

Epic were working on gears 2 since 2007. Look at this video look at the graphics.

Yep, it's sweet. You guys can also check out the GOW2 tech demo, all of it is in there. I dont know what it is. Are people sick and tired of waiting for November 2008 to come around that they have to start bashing a game already? Wasnt Gears of War great enough? I thought it's one of the best and still is. Until you see the game in it's naturally glorified state, then you have no say. Gears of War 2 is going to blow you away. Gears of War series isnt your average run of the mill title. Show some respect.
but it won't be as good as what they did in halo 2 because in halo when you were the arbiter you never had to shoot at marines it was always the flood or the evil covanent, instead of marines because no one wants to shoot at you own people. In Gears of war there is no third enemy for the locus to shoot at instead of you. Basically it is like playing chess with yourselfSuper-Penguin
