I know it's made by Bioware, which are the people that made KOTOR 1... so my question is, is it like KOTOR? Or is a real-time kinda shooter with levels and experience to be gained?

Little bit of both, the fighting is like Gears meets Freedom Fighters, the combat is pretty solid for the most part, sometimes it can get a little retarded when enemies rush you and you end up doing the circle strafe garbage but when they hold their ground and you end up in a shootout it can be pretty fun. The story and rpg aspects are top notch, if you go into this game with the idea that you want to be sucked into the mass effect universe and you talk to everyone and do the sidequests and generally try to get as much out of it as you can it can be a really rewarding experience.

Gamespot and other sites have countless videos of all aspects of Mass Effect that you can check out. Better yet, Gamersyde has the first 30+ minutes of gameplay from the game so you really see what the game is about.

if you likereally engaging sci-fi story....as good as there has ever been really, and solid action battles then it is impossible not to love this game. it can be very addicting and has a very interesting story arc and the charatcers are amazing. it is the best RPG i have ever played, and one of the best games i have played in a long time. And IMO the best game of thisyear.Just one guy talking here.

Mass Effect is like sticking your member in warm apple pie...with frame rate drops and texture pop in.

the fighting in this game felt like Rainbow 6 vegas mixed with KOTOR, you can take (and usually need to) lots of cover and then pause at any time to give squad commands. the command system works really well and is pretty easy to use. the rpg side of this game is great too, there is a huge depth to the world that they created for mass effect. through the use of the games codexs you will get backstoryon everything from wars to computer consoles. definitely recommend this game.

It sure is... but how about that framerate, HUH?

Personally, I thought the game disappointed on just about every level. Speaking as someone who followed the game closely from its announcement, it just doesn't deliver on what it said it would.

The graphics and design are absolutely beautiful, but plagued by glitches, texture pop-in and at times unplayable framerates (not going to get into spoiler territory, but one sequence was like a slideshow)

The much vaunted storyline is really formulaic, and fails to capitalize on what was a really interesting premise. No twists, no turns, just the good guys kicking the bad guys' ass.

The combat is really shaky. AI, controls and a clumsy middle-ground between RPG and Shooter leaves it a jack of all trades and a master of none when it comes to gameplay.

The conversation system, which was described as this cool real-time thing where you actually PLAYED the conversations in real time, is effectively no different to the KOTOR conversation system. The only different is in the graphics, and the occasional opportunity to punch someone to end the sequence. You are still just picking options from a conversation tree. This was perhaps the aspect I found the most disappointing ... on a second playthrough, it becomes even more obvious how weak this feature is... often times when you are presented with multiple dialogue options, they produce the same thing.

So a real missed opportunity IMO.
