Because you can do WHATEVER you want..it is not linear in an any way. You dont even have to follow what story line they have. If you go to a town and set up shop..and thats it for the entire game..well hey..you can...or if you want to go to that town and murder everyone in it so it becomes a ghost town and you have your own lil town...wel lthen you can do that too...but then what quests there are you might not be able to do because guess what? That innocent guy you saw on the road...you know the one you stuck arrows into and then made get eatin by wild animals just for a laugh? Ya well he ahd a quest for best sword in the game..oh well...
the game is COMPLETE freedom..thats why its special

but with much more freedom... gta is quite linear compared to the elder scrolls
im really into rpgs but what i really dont like is the 1st person perspective. unless im playing an action based shooter i want to be able to see my character. that might seem like a small thing but ill never buy the game because of it. The_Laser08
You can play in 3rd person this time or 1st in this game..so bets of both worlds
And yes like GTA...cept alot more freedom..when i say freedom..i mean it man lol..every single NPC has their own 24 hour schedule..hell im gonna be a stalker!!
i think this game is gonna suck since i hate RPG's, and yall havent even played this game yet so why ask what is so great about it.smoothrj
well If you played the past elderscrolls games you would see why so many people like it. Morrowind took me over 2 years to complete fully (all the strongholds and quests) so for sure I will get oblivion.

Exactly! The elder scroll's series is unparalleled on the consoles for its ability to keep u engrossed in the game. Everytime u think ur done....there is something more to explore. I cant wait to get it. Oh and its 16miles of exploration not 60 last I heard. Even still...16miles is ALOT of exploration.a lot of people seem really excited for oblivion. i dont get it though, maybe its just because i dont normally like RPGs, but this game doesnt seem special. its looks really good technical wise, and the 60 mile play area sounds neat; but why do people want this so much?DDX2well ive always loved rpgs apart from the towns and a life like ecosystem sounds sweet. also im quite a fan of morrowind
I like to think of it this way....
This will be a game you can almost "live" in. Everything you do is your choice. If you want some direction in the game, you can start following the main plot line. But you do not have to. You can explore this huge land, finding people to help/rob, places to explore, find exotic items to sell/trade, make a house your own, ect. As other people have mentioned, the NPC will always be doing some sort of activity, like hunting for food, performing their job, cleaning, sleeping, and interacting. The world will be alive around you. Combine all of this with possibly the best looking game yet, and you will be totally emerged in your surroundings.Â
You still think this game will suck?
ShadyKidd
now that you put it that way, this game does sound really interesting. i really like free roam games, and this sounds awesome.
Hmm
Listening to ya'll im kinda intreasted in this game
When does it come out???

I think a square mile is 4 miles, so multiply that by 16 and thats what you get.Well for one thing, you can go into a house and cut the heads off the people living there. That by itself makes this game worth buying.RandomTask221

No, a sq. mile is a sq. shape of land with each side equaling 1 mile. BTW 16x4=64 not 60.Take me for example.....i love gta, but it looks like ass and all you do is go on missions. I have NEVER played any TES game but after doing research on this game it makes me wanna never gangbang again. This game truly alows you to live any life you wish......oh and does anyone know if Morrowind is BC.........vagabond_gamerWhen I first started hearing about Oblivion I cancelled my Madden 360 game and put that on preorder. I also enjoy GTA, but after a few solid hours of play it is incredibly repetitve. With this gamr that won't be possible.
I wonder if u can create ur own person?s_2_realYes u can. The create a character in Oblivion is extensive this time around. Wait and u will see.... Check out Game Informer for more info on the create a character.

Ok, just to clarify. A mile is 5,280 ft. long. To calculate the sq. feet of a sq. mile you simply multiply 5,280 by 5,280. Giving you 27,878,400 sq. feet. Now, if Oblivion has 16 sq. miles, multiply the 27,878,400 ft. by 16 and you have the total square footage for Oblivion. Which is 446,054,400 ft.  Now. . . . 60 miles (not square miles) would be 5280 ft. by 60, giving you 316,800 ft. . . whoopie. So to say the game has 60 miles is doing it a great disservice.
You're welcome.

I actually don't like the game being completely non-linear. I Found elder scrolls III To be so unfocused that I just got lost. I think this game needs to have a little more focus. I hope it is structured somewhat like WOW in that there are easy to find main quests and quests that link to others and then side quests. I think they should make it obvious where you need to go to continue the story rather than make you explore aimlessly. I'm not real hardcore RPG player but I do like the games. But hopefully they will make it more accessible especially since it's going to be on a console. I will wait for the review before I decide to buy but it would be nice to have a good story-driven adventure game like this for 360. Too many 1st person shooters right now.
