What is the function of the Cerberus network in ME2?

I jus bought Mass Effect 2 and want to know the function of the cerberus network, is a necessary feature of the game or a downloadable content that is vaulable but a player can live without?

It is a way of persuading people to buy the game new rather than preowned. By shipping it with a one time use code the intention is that people buying it new will use the code before they trade it in. By putting a value on it (800 or 1200MS points I think) it differentiates a new copy from the used one that would typically be just $5 cheaper - since the DLC would cost more than that it tries to convince you the new version is the better deal. The Cerberus network occasionally releases some new content for the game. There was an additional crew member along with his character story mission, as well as being able to visit the original Normandy.

As much as I love this game..adding new characters with nothing really being expanded on doesn't entice me enough to purchase that Cerberus thing. (ie.hence I got it used)

^This. Just an incentive for buying the game new or making money off of used copies. Its been awhile since I have played ME2, but last I checked there wasn't anything life altering in it, just a few minor extras.

Man I was wondering the same thing. Good post, I think I will save up and buy the gears 2 all fronts pack. Anyone have any other suggestions?
