I think Gamespot's review speaks for itself....
All hype. :P
ParadiseAwaits
Not at all, the review is underrated and it should have been in the 9.0's, it is an excellent game that should have replaced its score with halo 3. Halo 3 was all hype while ME is all gameplay.
I think Gamespot's review speaks for itself....
games that don't have an ad don't get AAA status, regardless of quality.
ParadiseAwaits
I agree. Its sad, but thats the world we live in.

I bought it.
the ending was great, unlike some games (Halo 3)I thought it was a fantastic experience and is now one of my favourite games of all time. It was well written and acted and I enjoyed every single moment of it.
The only bad thing about the game is that it ended :(

As far as I know, 8.5 isn't "review-speak" for All hype.
Unless something drastically bad happens for the remainder of the game (I'm past the half-way point), I see no justification for why this game deserves the same mark as the Darkness, or a lower mark than Forza 2 or Gears of War.

I usually think that quote is stupid and cheasy, but for this game I actually agree. The story was incredible,I actually enjoyed it almost as much as Star Wars.
You can see they were influenced alot by Star Wars. The Citadel is a clear copy of the Star Wars planet,Coruscant.
Fantastic game all around, but I wish it had more replay value.
hey guys i like oblivion a lotand i like shooters alot 2. But mass effects combat looks boring u think i shod still get it.saw213
If you like Oblvion and shooters then this game was made specifically for you, because that's basically what it is. It's a great shooter and rpg. I love it for thta very reason. The combat is great imo....
It is a fantastic game. My full review can be found here if you're interested. Also, Hitchy a turn based rpg is when both you and the enemies you are facing take turns going. First you go, then your enemy, then you, then your enemy. etc. Mass Effect is NOT a turn based game.nocoolnamejim
What's an example of one? (apart from the obvious, Pokemon)
dang gamespots like taht...keeps rating games that revolutionize and artsy lower
i mean 8.5 and 9 aren't bad but i have to say mass effect and bioshock are far beyond halo 3...most ppl who actually play games and aren't the 13 year olds who scream **** on xbox live would probably agree
3rd play through and loving it even more 8.5 is a crime how can a game of this calibre score that it does have its problems but these are technical rather then anything to do with the actual game also there not major and u barely recognise them
If HALO 3 cans core 9.5 then this is a 10 it lives up to the hype in every aspect
the main story is short but the sheer amount of sidequests make up for that
Am I the only one who thinks the combat is awesome? It seems to me like bioware did a great job blending rpg elements with a tactical shooter really well. The ai is suspect at times and the aiming isnt the greatest but its really good. It's not as smooth as halo or cod4. you cant jump and stuff and its not as fluid but it reminds me of gears mixed with a good tactical shooter and an rpg. You have special biotic powers and abilities. It's really well done. It can be better, but I really love the direction they are headed. In essense you are doing a lot more in the combat scenes then halo and gears and there is much more too it and it doesnt lose that feel of a shooter in the process. It's just really well done.Walker34
The combat is great it tactical and fun
almost likea Ghost Recon Super Uber Advance Text reader
exactly it's like they took the duck and cover system from gears. the tactical part from ghost recon, and added all sorts of cool special abilities and role playing elements. It's really good. On top of all of that you have tons of different equipment and ammo and upgrades and your own players characteristics and level playing a factor and its well balanced. In essence its doing a lot more than halo or cod4 do. Its not as fluid. Its not even as fluid as another rpg like wow, but its a different style. They blended the tactical part without making it turn based. Its kind of in between where its real time but its also tactical. I like it. Id prefer it all be real time but for a single player rpg its done perfectly imo.
All they had to do was just keep it in real time instead of pausing when you hit the right and left bumper to bring up the different abilities and weapon changes. I understand why it pauses for a single player game but it would have been easy to make it all real time.
too much talking, not enough action.. too many conversations! why cant they have epic cutscenes like in the MGS series but still keep the interactivity?? I'm about 3 hours in and nothing's really toooo impressive yet. btw, the graphics stutter way too much..

That I can agree with. That's a taste in games though. Alot of people like all the dialogue. I dont so much. Bioware always overdoes it in this area imo. They have way too much dialogue and choices and that is a big part of their games. I dont like that so much. I'd much rather something like GTA where you have missions and its more in realtime. I'd like to be walking through a city in mass effect and have someone start shooting at me randomly without having to talk to them first. I havent come across this yet, but i'm assuming this does not happen. I'd much prefer an rpg where things happen more in real time like that.

I'm hearing a lot about this graphics stutter... Is it because I'm too engrossed by the gameplay to even notice?
