sorry but i've had only these consoles before (and now), and they all had no harddrive:

NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, Gamecube, Wii

So I don't know what the harddrive space is for?

@stevenk4k5 - you mean I can install yahoo messenger on it? :P

The hard drive space is to store demos, saved games, movies, music, etc. It's for data storage. And no you can't install YIM on it, lmao.

Xbox Live has an Xbox Live Marketplace, which is generally pretty simple to sort through, on it you can download new themes, gamerpic, demos of games, trailers for games, and any updates/addons for your games. Using the Video Marketplace, you can also download/rent movies, and download television shows. If you plan on downloading any shows or videos then any HD other then the 20 Gig is fine. You can also download Xbox Live Arcade titles to play.

Ya, no joke. Someone has to be really behind on the modern times if they asked that kind of a question.

Also, you'll be able to install your game on your Xbox 360 with the upcoming Fall update. This will make the game run smoother and speed up load times.

Just an honest question tbh, he probably never thought of reasons past ''I just want to play more games'' when he thought he wanted an 360. Hardly that bad of a question.

@adamporter - thanks. i don't know what these guys are talking about being "behind on modern times"...i was just interested on xbox360 to play games.

i asked because there was news that xbox360 will shed $100 off in the coming months (within this year), and that the version without harddisk is cheapest...so i was asking what the harddisk is for.

from what was mentioned here, xbox360 doesn't really need a harddisk to play games (except for xboxlive arcade right?). that was all i was asking. but that in the coming Fall, owners could install their games on the harddisk for smoother gameplay.

Believe me when I say that sooner or later, EVERYONE buys a hard drive. I would strongly suggest you buy it with your console and save money than spend a lot of money later on a standalone HDD. Besides, the Arcade doesn't come with a headset or component cables. :D

Trust me, you'll need the hardrive. Especially if you want to download demos, videos or map packs for your favorite games.

You have to look at it this way when it comes to the hard drive not included

Just the game itself off the disk? You'll be fine

But if that game has extra content (free or charged) you'll be out of luck

If that game has a patch you'll be out of luck

If you want to play original XBOX games you'll be out of luck

An Xbox 360 without a HDD is a neutered beast. You need it for downloading all the brilliant games on the marketplace, you don't even need to be a Gold member to do that. Trust me, lots of great stuff on there. If you only play a handful of games though, and don't care about online, the cheapest no HDD model comes with a 512MB memory card, and should have you covered, really.
