My friend is arguing with me that video games make people fat. Sounds stupid.. I know..

Just give your opinions.

I personally believe that it's more of an issue with processed foods, and fast food than anything.

Well it will vary with different people... Some people play games all the time and still excercise and others play the same amout and don't, i don't think it contributes but it might encourage it

i think its an excuse but if you are genetically predisposed to being fat i guess it doesn't really matter what you do. i play video games alot but i am also on a competitive soccer team and play for my high school as well. i think blaming videogames is dumb cuz its just like tv bu interactive. also i mostly use my xbox/ps3 for gaming with friends like winning eleven and madden and that can become a workout after beating eachother physically after on the game.

No, in fact one of the symptoms of video game addiction is supposed to be weight loss because the addict would rather game then eat.

Well I like to eat, and I play video games, but I also work and get out daily, people that eat and don't have a job and stay in the house all day and play games and do nothing else might be obese.

I posted a similar thread in the General Discussion and was upset to find only one person respond, glad to see more are here.

Like its been said, videogames obviously dont make people fat, but for a lazier person it does seem to encourage it. I personally play videogames at night after getting home from the gym, but were someone who was not physically active, who didnt go running right at the crack of dawn, who didnt eat healthy, well then what do you expect? They are just sitting there, and if they arent known to exercise or play sports or anything, what do you think they will continue to do... they will sit and play more games. Half the time you listen to Live too, people are eating, whether it be ice cream or potato chips or some type of greasy or fattning food. I dont ever recall hearing someone other than myself apologize for chewing an apple too loudly over the mic.

Overall its a persons mindset that makes them obese. Yes I bet there are some EXTREMELY RARE cases where people will and always will be naturally fat, but for how many people make that claim, medically only about 1/1,000,000 are actually telling the truth. Its as though they use it as an excuse to make them feel better, to give reason and justification as to why they are so overweight. But bringing it back to videogames, I totally understand videogames to be a big contributor as to reasons obesity is growing, but not the main one. Another idea to think about too, if you are overweight, or unhappy with the way you look, videogames can be an escape for you, You can go online and play as an Elf, or Marine, or Super Hero and noone will judge you on how you look, because to them they only see your character model. So not only does it seem to invoke laziness in others, it also can be seen as an escape from the reality of ones body, but obviously trying to escape that reality rather than fix it will only make things worse and worse.

I could ramble on and on about this topic, but I think this is good enough for one reply hah

No Video Games do not make you fat, but playing them all day and just sitting on your couch the whole day will. I do play about 3-4 hours of videogames a day or more but I still find time to go to the gym every day for at least an hour. You can't just sit in front of your TV/monitor all day that will make you fat

Its got nothing to do with the 360 or its games. Just a general question on gaming as a whole. It doesn't belong here, just like it doesn't belong on any other CONSOLE SPECIFIC boards.

It's pretty simple - you'll get some kids who don't want to be active and will sit around all day. They could be watching TV, listening to music, reading or indeed playing video games. If these kids don't want to be active and play sports etc, they'll sit around doing something inactive regardless of whether video games are available. They'll get fat if they sit around eating all day, consuming more calories than they burn.

At the end of the day, it's all about balance: I played video games a lot as a kid, but I played rugby too. I had a pretty good diet overall. Video games won't make you fat directly: An inactive lifestyle and a crappy diet will though.

Wow, if anything it makes you lose weight I don't know about anyone else, but when I'm gaming online with friends and we play for a long time lots of times I wont eat a thing until everyone is done for the night even if I'm kind of hungry because we're usually playing fast paced games like Gears, Rainbow, or GRAW and even when I'm playing SP games I still dont really eat because I'm doing something else how am I supposed to eat while playing a game.

But if you play late at night like that and not get off until say 2am by that time you are going to realize hey, everyones off and Im hungry let me grab a bite to eat then go to bed.

When really you shouldnt eat at least an hour before you go to bed, its easier for your digestive system to process the food, and most likely that food will still be festering in your stomach when you wake up the next morning

Moreover the Obesity factor bub. Have you looked around lately? Its disgusting how large todays population is becoming and theres nothing stopping it, in the past years it has only gotten larger and larger.

Whether you are skinny or fat, you still should be bothered by this idea because it is a reflection on Americans. Head over to France and try to pickupsome food there, if you are accustomed to the normal massive amountsAmericans eat you will think they are joking with thesmall amount you recieve as a main course. Not only is it visually not very good, but the physical impact it is having on peoples bodies. Its disgusting to think that the top killers are Smoking and Obesity. Essentialy most of the worlds population is commiting suicide if you look at it from a medical standpoint.

idk, it is a large topic, maybe not as much the videogame part, but it does play a role and it is something that should be discussed.

People are fat for one reason: THEY INTAKE MORE FAT AND CALORIES THAN THEY BURN OFF! It's that simple. There are very rare conditions that can affect wieght like Thyroid issues, but these are so rare that you can safely call anyone you see on the street a lazy, over-eating fatass.

It's not video games that make you fat it's what you do while playing them: sit and/or eat (the same with drinking beer and watching TV).

haha I get what you mean but worded funny, it made me giggle.

How else are you supposed to play games besides sitting? Ild assume its pretty hard to play Shadowrun while doing some pushups or going for a run lol

Sure, they are human. lazy over-eating fatass humans. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate fat people, but I am sick of people blaming others for their weight issues. "It's Macdonalds fault" and "It's video games fault" is just retarded. I mean c'mon people, man up and take responsibility for your own actions. It's one of the few things in life that REALLY makes me angry.

Video gamescancontribute to obesitydue toa lack of physical activity, I can see where this is coming from b/c if I get really into a game I can sit for hours and not move anything but my fingers which is definitely not helping you burn any calories. But I'm not over weight at all, so it really depends on your eating habits and how much you sit around playing video games.

If you eat food and sit around all day, you don't burn caleries, and you get fat. Its not video-game specific. Really, you could argue sleeping makes people fat. If you eat a lot of food and sleep all day, you get fat. Anything that involves inactivity (movies, games, sitting just staring at the wall) will not burn caleries.

Like others have already said, its all about balance. For me, I love to play video games; I have chosen it as my "relaxing recreation." Instead of speding evenings watching tv, i play games, search the web, ect. Does that make me more fat than someone watching television?God I hope not.

All you gotta do is balance your lifestyle; set aside a part of for an inactive form of recreation, be it tv, web surfing, or games. The important part is to have time for something thats active. Heck, it doesn't have to even be something like a gym, you can do sports, or something totally unorganized that gets you moving. For me, I like to run because it also gives me a chance to listen to my iPod:D

Just do things in moderation and you should be well off.

You really need to lighten up dude,I see over weightpeople that are VERY busy that work ALL the timeand they don't have time to go to the gym b/c they're to busy supporting their family....also have you ever heard of genetics, you might be some skinny little kid but some people aren't as lucky as you, they were born with "fat" genes that cause them to gain weight multiple times faster.

Although Im not completely bashing you, find a doctor who would support your claim of people being born with "fat genes." Granted some people have slow metabolisms, but it has been proven that with diet and exercise your metabolism rate will greatly increase.

[QUOTE="billyforde"]People are fat for one reason: THEY INTAKE MORE FAT AND CALORIES THAN THEY BURN OFF! It's that simple. There are very rare conditions that can affect wieght like Thyroid issues, but these are so rare that you can safely call anyone you see on the street a lazy, over-eating fatass.Toyeboy

Or you could be a bit kinder with your word choice seeing that its not like they are no longer human. But I do see where you are coming from

This has not been proven. It's fatass propaganda. But seriously, I am not a skinny kid. I was fat in elementry school but through the posative reinforcement from my parents and organized sports, I got my fatass in decent shape. Dont tell me genetics, that is just an excuse.

Take a class in Biology. Genetics play a major role in weight. It's not "fatass" propoganda. That's like saying people who advocate exercise to fend off heart disease are just spewing "heart disease" propoganda. Some people are just genetically inclined to gain weight, and therefore its more difficult to lose the weight. Not everyone has hours a day to exercise.

IF U take control OF your LIFE and know exactly what to eat or become active and working out, then it doesnt matter if u play VIdeogames for 3 hours straight or 10 hours straight, because in the end, if u have a balanced schedule and eat less or the right food, then obesity is not your concern, but helping someone else that is obese without playing videogames
