Here the basic "types" of shooters
-Run and Gun:the original shooter type;sprinting, circle-strafing, jumping and shooting, vehicular combat type of game, examples include Halo and Unreal
-Semi-Tactical: puts an emphasis on getting into cover but is still somewhat forgiving, running out in the open is usually a bad idea but you have a little leeway, examples include Gears of War and Call of Duty
-Simulation: as close to the real thing as you'll get in a video game, every move requires careful thought and you're dead after 1 or 2 hits, examples include Rainbow Six and Operation Flashpoint
-Hybrid: shooters that incorporate elements from the action/adventure and role-playing genres; examples include Deus Ex and Bioshock
I like the hybrid type myself, breaks up the monotony
