It doesn't matter what genre (rpg, shooter), but what videogame seemed to pull you in the most and get you involved with its story?

Half Life!! The whole series. Ever since the first one, the expansions and HL2 (and episodes) each all have their own story advancement in the Half Life Universe. After episode 2, everyone wants to know whats gonna happen with gordon, alyx, the gman, and the borealis. It's one of the most unique, engaging, exciting stories ever.
Others would include, bioshock, metal gears, mass effect, plenty of final fantasy games, chrono trigger and many others as well. These are just the ones that stand out the most for me!
Fable 2

is this a joke? fable 2 had single-handedly the most dissappointing and weakest story of the entire year of 2008. for me personally, the hat goes off to bioshock. i initially wasn't pulled into the story, but once the big plot twist occured, i was hooked.
This gen: Mass Effect, no doubt.
Last gen: Morrowind
What's up with the FO3's and Fable 2's?? Their stories weren't really inspired, they mostly were second to the gameplay. Especially Fable 2's story was almost unnoticable because they were more like seperate cliché events with no real ending to them. As for FO3, I know Bethesda can make good stories, the background stories in Morrowind and Oblivion and the atmospheric plot of Morrowind proved it. But for FO3 they seemed to really want to make a Fallout game so they were inspired witht he world, gameplay and side quests but the main plot seemed to be just their because it's compulsory.
Metal Gear Solid series without a doubt, but since this is a Xbox 360 forum, it's got to be Mass Effect.

It's much easier this way... thanks!
Mass Effect. Fallout 3. Bioshock is good, but there are too many unanswered questions.DPhunkT
yea and that makes bioshock a good story!!!
i'm kinda surprised nobody said gears 2. being inside a giant worm, seeing what happened to maria, and fighting my way into a giant palace seemed to do it for me. i loved the single player
Mass Effect, Metal Gear Solid, Halo Trilogy, and Final Fantasy 7 (Possibly the best RPG of all time)
Well, it depends on what you think the best kind of storytelling is. If you want a big, adrenaline fueled epic, then the Halo series is probably your best bet.
For a complex narrative with high production values, the Metal Gear Solid series is the way to go.
If you want a small story with a different take on telling the story, go with Portal.
For RPG's the list could go on and on, but Final Fantasy 2/4 is great, along with most games from that series.
An RPG subset is the open world RPG, and Oblivion is the 800 lb gorilla in this.
Bioshock and Half-Life fit into their own immersive category, and both have great stories.
Indie games have rather unique stories, Braid's story is quite lovely. In the same vein Passage and Gravitation tell whatever story you want, and can hit you pretty hard(if you haven't played either of them, look them up. They are free and well worth the 13 minutes it takes to play both).
My own personal favorites, aside from those previously mentioned, are: Beyond Good and Evil, the Zelda series, Uncharted, Fable 1&2, Tales of Symphonia, Viewtiful Joe, the Harvest Moon series, and Sigma Star Saga.
