Well conscidering that movies are first and foremost about characters, Gears would trump the ever living hell out of Halo as there was some character development in Gears and none in Halo. Master Chief has no character at all. The other characters in Halo are also seriously .5 dimensional. Don't get me wrong Halo is a great game but it intentionally removed any and all character traits from it's main character to aid in immersion. It works "OK" in a game but it would be disasterous for a movie or a novel.
As for which had more straight up plot. Sure Halo has more plot than Gears, but if it's going to be an interesting movie I'd hope the plot would be *new and not a rehash of the game plots.

thats why halo would only be a good film if they followed the books aswell as the games, there is alot of character development in the books.
but i think that it would be harder to make a gears film because of the plot, its basically man fight monster, i reckon gears 2 will have a deeper plot better suited for the big screen.
either way, i'd love to see these two epic worlds brought to life through cinema, especially gears' battle scenes.
