everyone gripes about wifi or built in HD-DVD drive but what i think would've been truly awesome..

Temporary Game storage

.. think about ... Slap a game in there and hit download to HDD... it stays in there for 7-14 days and is automatically deleted (to stop renters from keeping games) You could store around 13 - 17 games on that 120 Gig Drive, never have to swap a disc during your gaming session and Loading times will be cut down tremendously .. It's actually something they can still do with a dash update but would only make sense for people with the 120 gig drive.. i think it would make that drive seem almost worth $180 though.. edited for clarity.. edited again to try and get more people to read the damn thing

The problem is because Microsoft didn't completely commit to the hard drive (thanks Core system), developers dont have the options to use the HD as much as they could.   It would be a great idea but it would alienate all the Core owners.   Just like the Sega CD and 32x, not everyone can use it.

I think the core users will actually be in a better situation then the premium owners to take advantage of this.. they can buy the 120gig hard drive (which really should be $120 ) transfer the saves from their memory cards and not have a completely useless 20 gig hard drive laying around. (of course the 20 giggers can always sell their hard drives to core users after transferring their data to the 120)
and it doesn't alienate anybody because it's not like games will be released that require this feature, it's just a bonus convenience for those that fork out the extra bucks.

that'd be cool, but the 7-14 day thing to prevent renters would be totally retarded, there should be some way for the system to know if the game has been bought or not, like, i dunno special code, but it deleting after a week woudl suck

but if they did that then it may eliminate the used game business, this way people can still sell Used games , the renters don't become cheap retailers we still have the convenience of completely cached games... maybe a month would be better..

edit: I think i see what you mean.. like an activation key, where if you didn't buy the game brand new, you wouldn't be able to cache it but you can still play by throwing in the disc... good idea, cause i think that may be something MS would do.. then they can spot pirates, but it may be too late to use it on already released games.

when you say "to stop renters from keeping games," how are you going to prevent it if they extract the game data to their computer, burn it onto a dvd9, and then keep it?  I'm sure microsoft thought of it already but will just expand the pirating scene.  Thats what those online rent stores are for.

It is an interesting idea but what happens when the game is erased?  It's gone and I want itr back.

Except I think what the TC is implying is that this option would be an opt-in thing for users that have a 360 with hard drive. Core users wouldn't be alienated because the option wouldn't be there to begin with.

put the disc in again and download it again.. should only take a minute or two.. you could (theoretically) set it to automatically do it in the background while you play

A similiar idea like this has been done before on the ps2 with socom 2.  There was an option for dumping the game onto the hard drive (if you had one of course) through the game.  There would be no issue of piracy as you would still need the disc in the drive to play it, but all the data would be loaded off the hard drive.

Dumping the game to the hard drive to improve loading times is a good idea, dumping the game so that you don't need to put the disc in anymore is a bad idea as it only leads to loopholes and exploits even with a timer.

what's stopping them from doing that now?
i think it'll be easier to extract the game from the DVD itself then to take apart the hard drive to copy it to your computer.. and it doesn't have to be stored as it is on the DVD, it could be encrypted using your xbox's serial number as the key so that only your box can run it.
and nothing will stop the pirates, the best you can hope for is to make Live to awesome to live with out.
