GoW is a great game, the story mode is about 10 hours and the live is cool (if u ignore the five year old kids) but if you want a lengthy game, go for oblivion or mass effect (if you are in to rpg's) then there is also halo 3
Call of Duty 4 will give you a good experience of the online gameplay, but the campain isnt all that good so that and a game with a good campain, perhaps Ghost Recon 2 or GOW
gears of war is the best game for the 360 in my opinion, i only bought the system for that game. it has a greate story mode and the online gameplay is excellent. the wepons are crazy the grafics are insane and the way they explode whene u use the shotgun or curv stomp or get a head shot with the sniper will get u hooked for months. The 360 has a couple of good games but ifyou want a game to start off with i say go with gears. you wont regret it

GOW is great if you have live but the story is short. Also the map packs are free also. The map packs for Vegas are free also. Many people still play Calypso Casino. COD4 is addictive like the story is great and the online allows you to reset your rank 10 times when you reach prestige mode (lvl.55). Assassin's Creed is great from the minute you put the game in. A lot of great games are out. Watching reviews from different sites really helps in decision making of great games.
#1 Name some games that you like!!! Mass Effect is awesome but if you hate RPGs it would be a bad recommendation. Similarily, I'd recommend Halo 3 but if you hate FPS then that'd be a bad choice.
If you're buying a 360, you'll get Forza and Marvel Alliance. I haven't played the Marvel one yet (too busy with Naruto, Forza and Mass Effect) but it got good reviews so it should be fun. You'll already have a racing game and an action game. They are giving away Halo 3 if you buy a 360 and Live before sometime in December, so definately don't purchase that game. But thats 3 well reviewed games in 3 different genres. That should satisfy you for a while. If you like extreme sport, I guess go with Skate. You should be able to find it at a good price used. Or if you like RPGs pick Eternal Sonata or Mass Effect.
