"The aegis (Greek), already attested in the Iliad, is the shield or buckler of Zeus, which according to Homer was fashioned for him by Hephaestus, furnished with golden tassels and bearing the gorgoneion (Medusa's head) in the central boss. The Attic vase-painters retained an archaic tradition that the tassels had originally been serpents in their representations of the ægis." -Wikipedia

Just because it is Wiki, doesn't mean it is right either.  The aegis is the leather shield that Athena bore when she sprung from the head of Zeus.

Just because it is Wiki, doesn't mean it is right either.  The aegis is the leather shield that Athena bore when she sprung from the head of Zeus.

Though she sprung from his head fully grown and armed, however i don't recall it being said she was wearing the aegis as well.. though she might well have.  Greek mythology has plenty of contradictions.

Either way, the aegis was first for zeus and it was said to be made from the skin of the goat that suckled him.  Many things in greek mythology come forth to explain natural phenomenon, i believe the aegis was first used by zeus to create violent storms(perhaps this is what teh game gets its name from rather then the shield?  i havent played it yet).  However, it later became more associated with being armor of some kind.  Though, if i do recall, there is still some debate about the aegis.  I love greek mythology, but the aegis was never something i looked into much.

The aegis is often depicted as the cowl Pallas Athene wears, with the head of medusa fastned on.
