COD 4, Halo 3, RSV, Gears of War, Team Fortress 2, GRAW 2, GH 3.... those are all the essential games for MP on the 360 but some would say Shadowrun but imo it's boring since most of the time you'll be playing bots..
Get saints row if you like good third person shooters with a lot of customization, get gears of war if you got online friends to play with, get COD4 if you like to play alone or get halo 3 if you like simple FPS(not bad only simple) action.
These are the only ones I'd actually consider playing. Gears is decent, but no one plays ranked matches any more, and I find that most of the people you play with are either a**holes or arrogant 9-year olds with negligent parents. And the lobbying and team selection options usually stick you on the team with the 9-year-olds if you join a player match late.
I got Orange Box for Christmas, but I haven't gotten around to playing TF2 yet, so that doesn't make my list.

PLaying against bots? Ive never once played against bots, and ive had the game since the day it came out.
Tutorial was the only time ive played bots.
Done thousands of matches and all real people playing
Rainbow 6 Vegas, hands down. You've got the option of playing the entire single player campaign in co-op, then there's all of the terrorist hunt missions you can do with a total of 4 player co-op, to top it off it has got some insanely good competitive multi with new gear for you to earn and a completely customizable character. It destroys.
