Im really considering getting an xbox 360, but i dont have much money right now so im thinking of getting the core system. However everyone seems to think its a bad idea. I dont have a HD tv and dont think i will be getting one any time soon, is it just because you dont get the hd cables? please help a noob out so he can make up his mind.

It's because you get hardly anything with it. If you buy a core, you will need to buy a memory card for 40 bucks just so you can play games. IF you get the premium, you get a headset, hardrive, free month of live, wireless controller, and I think that's it. The core will just have you spending a lot more money in the long run and maybe in the short run. Think about it, would you rather spend 340 dollars on a core or just save a little more and get the 400 dollar premium.

I live in Australia, the price difference is more significant, also i get a deal with the core where i get, gears of war, kameo, and PGR, for around the same price as a premium. Would you still advise the premium?

You will need the premium if you are planning to get online in Xbox Live in the near future (it will be near, trust me) the reason is because if you download other games and movies or videos, or music, or demos you will need the hardrive. Get the premium! ;P

The core is nice when you need a new system to replace a broken/missing/stolen/absent premium 360 but don't need the premuim features (since you'd already have the premium accesories.)

Eventually I will have a core strictly for modding purposes and a separte legitimate 360 for online play.

Lack of Hardrive to save, get emulation software to play original Xbox games, download demos, etc. Comes with a Wireless controller and Headset, a good thing to have online.

The main seperating factor is the lack of HD. Think of it this way - The core system is for somebody who wants to buy a 'base pack' and build up to a premium. I got a core at launch, as there was no way of getting a premium because i didnt pre-order. So I ended up spending less on the day, but more over a period of time. If your are going on Live anytime soon, then the premium is the best bet. Also, you say you can get a core + 3 games for the price of a premium, yet you will need a memory card (unless one is included) Soooo, why not just get a premium and Gears of War? Instead of a core + 3 games + a memory card.

Thanks for the info guys.... well yeah i could do that, because i am a huge fan of online gaming. I guess im better of just waiting a bit longer then, for my console. Oh BTW do you guys reckon i should just wait for the halo 3 pack.... when will that be coming back?

And also, Gears of War, in my opinion, is much more fun than Halo 2 online.

Dont go with ebay. You dont get any warranty.

If you are desperate to get a 360 and play online, then would it not be cheaper to get a core, a memory card and GoW?

Also, as far as i know, ALL 360's come with one month of XBL gold. It is activated by signing up XBL on your 360, and selecting 'silver'.

Just get what you can afford the good thing is that they're not different you can just build up the core into the preium in no time some people are over exaggerating. it you just want everything get the premium, if you dont have the money get the core and build on it over time its that easy. :)

If you don't have the option to get online, then I would definetly suggest getting a core system. If you can, then try to get a premium and if you like to download a lot of stuff, then get an Elite.

It's better for Live in the sense that you need an HDD to download extra content (like maps) and in order to use the Video Marketplace etc. Overall the Premium is a much better deal. For a start, you only get a wired controller with the Core. Trust me, after 10 minutes of playing with the wireless controller you will wonder how you ever dealt with wires.

Kool_kat, I'm sure there a lot of deals that bundle a free game with a premium purchase.

BTW, if your thinking about the core system, remember that the memory card is 64mb and 512mb at $40 and $50, respectively.  Makes little sense to me, since the 20GB is only $100.

If youre a serious gamer go for the premium if only casual then i suggest the Wii cause in the long term Core will be more expensive.

The core system can be fine!

I got a core system because I was at the end of the line that cold Nov night when the 360 launched.   Now, I don't care about the wireless controller, b/c all of my XBOX and PS2 controllers were wired.  I didn't have an HDTV at the time, so the wires didn't bother me.  When I bought a year long XBOX Live Gold account, I got a free month and a free headset, so that evened that out.  IN the end, I spent $100 for a hard drive, and the only thing I was missing was the remote control, and I don't use my 360 for movies anyway.

I have several friends who have also gotten the core system, and not one of them have had a system malfunction.  This is not scientific, and may just be due to the fact that their are fewer cores out there, but you don't often hear about the Core systems breaking down.

It must be the chrome and the wireless controller.

Anyway, I would get the core and the three games, their all good games.  Then save up for a memory card or (perferably) hard drive.  You could even get the 120 GB hardrive or, the 20 GB HDD may dramatically decrease in cost.

It kinda depends on what you want. I got the core, regretted it at first, then just realized how a memory card is all I need. I don't really care for XBL Downloads and all I need to do is save my games. Plus, if I really wanted to get an HDD, I'll get the 120gb withought wasting money on the 20gb.

Oh but I should say the core I got came with a wireless controller and component cables.

Thanks a lot for the help guys, i think im just gonna sit tight and get the premium, because i want to go online and make the most of my new system when i get it, i reckon it will only take me about 3 months, hopefully there will be something like a price drop or a new bundle by then since elite is coming out. Thnx again.

i'm pretty sure that when the elite comes out there will be tons of people selling their perfectly good premiums hoping to get some of their investment back.  if you don't mind used, you'll probably find a premium at or below the cost of a new core soon.
