Am I missing something? It sure seems to kill the action/paceof videogames.

It kind of makes you think about what you're going to do.
I haven't played a turn based game since FFX though so I'm curious to see if I'll even enjoy FFXIII.
It depends on what king of turn based you mean. If you mean turn based like in Baldurs Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Ogre Battles 64, Dragons Age Origins, or KOTOR it adds strategy to the game while letting you watch the characters that you made the way you wanted fight in decent/really goodlooking combat. Usually in games like this the way you leveled up your characters or set up your party make a big difference in combat and the game really does require you to think about what you are doing. The "turns" are used more in a D&D way (especially in Baldurs Gate) where things like your weapons, stat buffs, class, speed, etc determine what you can do in a round or turn. I really enjoy games like these.
If you mean JRPG style turn based where the battle has to load, it is boring to watch after the first few battles, you usually have very little options for customizing your character, all you do is grind and choose attack and your strongest spell while in battle, and the only strategy is saving up your MP from battle to battle or remembering if that monster was weak to fire, lightning, or ice then I see no fun in that at all. I have always hated the battle systems of most JRPGs.
Well because you can take your time to think out your moves, plan ahead -you know- form a strategy of sorts
And because some people find that non-turn-based games simply turn into a frenzy of random button mashing that results in sore fingers and broken controllers.
I like the strategy that is involved in taking turns. It makes things so much more exciting for me. It's also fun to watch your actions play out in front of you.
