I have a 1080p hdtv and a premium x360.  It is connected through the component cables, which i do know can play 1080p for games that support it.  However, 1080p does not work through component cables for movies.  meaning movies on my hd dvd player will be in 720p and older dvd's can not be upscaled.

I absolutely refuse to buy a 360 elite because that is a waste of money, I already bought an xbox 360.  I am wondering if i connect my 360 to my tv through VGA cables if that will give me the 1080p that i am looking for in movies.  I do know that my tv has a vga imput.

If the final conclusion is that i must buy an xbox 360 elite.  that is the last straw in my book from microsoft.  this is my 3rd 360 already and i will trade it in and get a ps3 with the hdmi and blue already build in.  I am absolutely fed up and tired of having microsoft nickle and dime every penny from me.

So basically you're going to spend 479.99 or so to get 1080p on movies instead of the oh so crappy 720p that you're getting now. There are starving kids in Africa you know.

So you think people cant spend their money beacuse some people are starving? Even if we send money to them there will always be starving people.

I had this dilema when I first bought my Samsung 61" DLP with 1080p support. I didn't realize that my 360 didn't have HDMI support. After researching the matter, I discovered that there are three ways to get a 1080p connection with the 360, two for playing HD-DVD movies.

1. The first method are the standard component cables. It won't work for HD-DVD movies. No matter. Even with games, you're better off using 720p or 1080i in this mode. The system upscales to 1080p resolution but the framerate suffers. I tried this setup first. The graphics were great but the motion was kind of grainy. Given that my prior TV was a 20" SD, they still looked spectacular.

2. HD-VGA component cables. My TV doesn't have output for VGA component cables so I've never been able to test these. From what I understand their quality output is identical to...

3. HD-VGA p sub cable. This is what I use. There are actually two of these on the market and its confusing which is which. Last time I checked, Amazon.com actually had the two products swapped. The one labeled 'HD' can only output at 720p. The second one (which says 1080p on the back) is the one you want. When I first plugged this in and did the proper system config on my 360, I noticed that the framerate on 'Halo 3' had nearly doubled. It looked as good as Ninja Gaiden Sigma on PS3, which runs at 1080p/60fps through my HDMI connection. NGS looks about as good as anything out there. However, my Blue Ray discs look just a wee bit better than the HD-DVD stuff. Although that may be the quality of the disc masters. The Fountain (HD-DVD) and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (BR) are the two best looking films I've seen on the two mediums respectively. I can't really say one looked better than the other.

I can't really imagine an HDMI connection improving my connection in any visually discernable way...

This also sparked a question in my mind:

I have a 42" LG plasma screen TV connected to my 360 by component cables. Whenever I attempt to change my resolution to 1080p, it won't do it and I get a black screen that says no signalbefore it resets back to my normal 720p/1080i setting. If I switched to HDMI cables would the 1080p work.

By the way I'm talking about games. I could care less about getting movies over 1080i/720p.

Its pretty easy easy use VGA cables if your HDTV has a VGA receptor. If it doesnt just wait until your 360 craps out and gets the rings of death then you will get a new 360 which now have hdmi.

Honestly though you really cant tell the difference unless you have a 50+ tv. 1080p right now is basically a future signal that not many things can output. Most HD-DVDs and Bly-Rays arent even capable of true 1080p resolution because the discs are written to 720p. NO TV BROADCASTS ARE DONE IN 1080p.

Your DVD player can basically upscale the picture to 1080i or 1080p in the same way it can upconvert 480p to 720p. This being said unless you have a 50+ inch TV or are sitting within 2 feet of a 40" you will not be a ble to tell the difference. The difference between 1080p and 720p is not nearly as noticeable as from 480p to 720p.

Think of it this way you need a larger screen to notice more pixel defination do you think a 3000p tv would be better? NO because it would take so long to refresh the signal it would look like **** on current technology. Right now the best overall picture is actually 720p.
