While I love the concept of the Lancer, it really isn't all that useful in practice unless you get lucky enough to chainsaw them. During the campaign, I used the shotgun and the longshot throughout the entire insane campaign (from the first opportunity to acquire the weapons and on), and it was pretty easy. There were a few times that I had to ditch the shotgun for the hammer, or I would replace it with the boom shot or torque bow, but mostly I used the shotgun and sniper. I'm pretty sure I had the same sniper rifle throughout the whole game. For online though, since I suck, I'm just a shotgun noob, or if I'm the last man standing on my team I'll use the sniper/pistol combo.
When you think about it though, most of the weapons on Gears are just standard weapons; like the Sniper, Shotgun, Hammerburst, Pistol, and Lancer: they all just have their quirks or badass appearances that make them special. The torquebow really stands out though, which makes that one of the most badass weapons of all.
