I just finished looking at the RSV2 trailer and wondered, When do you think video games will have the same graphics as in the amazing CGI we see in video game trailers or movies?

Maybe in 3-5 generations?

...3-5 generations. I would say a lot sooner then that especially since 1080p isn't going to be the highest definition in the near future. We may see similar graphics either next generation or the one after. It also depends on the talents of the developers because the tech will be there for sure.

I believe so, for all the processing power getting better, we will be seeing games that look comparable to Pixar, problably better.

non-interactive graphics will always be of higher quality than interactive graphics, for obvious reasons. When will videogames look like current CGI animated films? Probably next-gen, possibly toward the end of the PS3's lifespan...so maybe in FFXIV, if we're lucky.

Well Ratchet and Clank on the PS3 is near Pixar quality so I'm guessing next generation or at the latest the following generation.

Well its a fact that pc will have those graphics first. seeings as how a graphics card thats 2x as powerful as the last is released usually yearly (though this gen has been slow tbh)

Ive always said, and still stick by it.. that graphics will be within the realistic realm by around 2020.

Virtual worlds are due around that time, proper virtual reality :)

haha are you kidding, PC cant even do that yet with current hardware so neither can a console.. especially not PS3.

Lets put it this way, its one thing getting the game running and looking realistic, how fast it will run is another story. Let's not forget that games graphics are toned down so it runs well.

If a high end rig can do something like Crysis, then my best guess will be next gen consoles and PCs in a year or two. Graphics can only go so far and they're nearing photorealism. I'd say that next gen, photorealism will be achieved, and they'll be focusing on physics interactions within environments, but there really isn't much more that can be done with this technology.

CGI graphics? About 2-3 more generations. Photo-realistic? Many many years from now, lol.

As XB360 users, I'd say in about 30-40 years since MS can't figure out how to get over the hump called RRoD.

Yeah that'll take a while for photo-realistic graphics. The closest we have to that now is Call of Duty 4 according to the back of the box lol.

Depends what you mean by photo-realistic. I mean, a game can look fantastic, but if it has anything less than steller animation then the effect is lost straight away. Take assassin's creed for example... It has graphics comparable to many other games yet it seems wat more realistic because of its kick ass animation. Realistic animation is very difficult to immpliment.

I don't think the animators actually made the animations for assassins creed, I was thinking they where using motion capture

That's conjecture. Realistically, a PC can do that with current hardware. Hardware that you (or any other civilian) can't afford. You're right about "how fast it will run." It's highly unlikely that even PC hardware on the market 3 years from now will be able to accomplish such a feat. I brought up the PS3 because, like it's previous iterations, we don't know what the system will be capable of in 5 years. Sony's hardware is, and always has been exceptionally complex. Could accomplished companies such as Square and Konami mimic CGI-esque graphics on the PS3 in five years? You can't say that it's impossible, and I can't say that it is certain. We don't really know what developers will be capable of doing with the PS3's hardware throughout it's lifespan. You forget that PC hardware (concerning graphics) is often far more simplistic than console hardware. If you keep your current setup, you will see little progression in the manipulation of your hardware concerning graphics, and I assume you know this. I don't believe we will see CGI-level graphics on the PS3 in it's lifespan, though I wouldn't be surprised if the graphics for the PC and PS3 get very close.

it depends what CGI movies you are talking about. but yeah for the most part, games that are interactive will be slightly behind movies. but really its not that far off. games like Assassins Creed feel and look almost like a cg movie, but not quite. and some games like Ace Combat 6 just mix the 2 together.

but Computers will be making games identical to cgi movies much sooner than consoles. it will just cost you a lot more to buy the video card required to do so.
