Im just curious as to why xbox users pay for their online while PS3 and Wii owners get theirs for free? Do we get faster connections, or like do we get certain DLC before the other consoles??

Your paying to use the Xbox Live service. It's really not that hard to understand.

No, I understand that. Maybe you just didn't understand the question. compared to free online for the PS3, what is so much better about xbox live that it costs $60 a year?

Well there is not a HUGE difference in terms of the actual service, but you do get...

  • You get a better system to function with. Not the console, but to me it is alot easier for me to be able to just click on my friends profile and invite them. This goes for all 360 games
  • The 360 seems to get demos for games before the PS3
  • The 360 does get some exclusive content,such as GTA4,Fallout 3,Tomb raider,etc,etc
  • It is only 40 bucks a year, that may not be free but it is still a great deal.

Unfortunately, being there fan-boys/girls, you won't get a straight answer. Some people claim that PS3 online is laggy as hell. Some people say they are the same.

You paying for the same stuff I guess. I truely don't know a WHOLE lot on the PS3 without having one. Paying $50 a year though, I'm extremely satisfied with the LIVE service .

Geddy i guess the xbox fanboys dont want to answer ur question straight because they know it is a ripoff but hate that their console does it. The main advantage is a big online community, but other than that there isnt really anything else (epicness does not count).

Wellfor instance Live has exclusive Fallout 3, GTA IV DLC content. Also Live has in game messaging, private chat, game invites Etc. (Not sure IF PS3 has this yet as i haven't played PSN in a while) Live also has Party chat, Netflix, Avatars. But really it was just a marketing descision for M$ as they decided they would charge for Live and make it good well Sony decided they would rather have free online and it's still pretty good but they probably lose money on it where M$ gains lots of money from Live.

You're paying to use your own internet to play games you purchased. In other words - nothing.

EDIT: Anyone who says it's a great deal is a moron. Straight up. A great deal is where you get something for a good price that would cost more elsewhere (or perhaps at another time). Since Xbox Live is the only service that charges you for this - it's quite the opposite of a "great deal". A great ripoff would be more accurate.

People keep saying you get exclusive downloadable content for games like fallout 3 and grand theft auto IV. But his question is what is he paying for! Not what you can spend money on if you spend money for LIVE

I have a 360 and a PS3 and I play both of them on line. Is the 360 a better online line experience as a whole? YES. Is the online play for multi-player games better? NO. Multiplayer games are not lacking from the online being free. There are more people with headsets on LIVE since the 360 comes with one and you have to buy one for the PS3 separate, but thats not always a bad thing with all the bratty punk kids yelling and acting stupid. I just wish PS3 had UNO.

your actually paying for little to nothing

Ps3 has online gaming for free with no lag depending on host and your connection.

Ps3 gets demos same time as us if not faster.

HOWEVER the ps3 does not get GTA and Fallout DLC but thats only cause bill gates opend his wallet and took out a daily withdrawl and said "here buy your girlfriend something nice" So you cant say your paying for the DLC. Cause i couldnt care less if the PS3 got the same DLC as us and we didnt have to pay for live besides we need to pay for the DLC as it is.

The marketplace is the exact same as the ps online store. they have films demos even old ps1 games so were not paying to have them.

the only idea i have is the friends system witch to be honest isnt worth the amount being charged. Cause you could easily live without it.

so anyone still think Live is worth it?

for all games on the 360, microsoft centrally runs the online service for the games. that means that online upkeep and support is provided by microsoft. for the ps3, each individual publisher who wants to make a game with online multiplayer must host their own servers. this leads to much more unstable online support in ps3 games. having centralized servers maintained by microsoft also lowers the production costs of game developers.

It'sfunny people listing exclusive DLC as things you "pay for by getting live gold". In otherwords you're saying that you pay for Xbox Live Gold so that you can screw PS3 users out of DLC. You do realize that they would still make the DLC without M$ paying for it to be exclusive? You do know you they get money for selling the DLC to the users?

larger online community, more mics, and party chat...

i'd say those three things already make up for the measly 5 dollars a month

and yes i'd say exclusive DL content too, it does consider as something beneficial to live instead of psn if WE have it and YOU do not!

ever feel like ps3 fanboys are obsessed with the xbox 360...

and obsession often leads to jealousy -_-

There's a lot of disinformation in this post. The only difference between Gold and Silver (Free) XBLA accounts is that Gold allows you to play your multi-player games online. Gold also will get some download-able content a few days before Silver accounts. That is the only difference, thus the only thing you're paying for.

I swear half the people in here should be politicians. Way to ignore the question and fire off random "it's cheap, who cares, you're stupid..." crap.

actually no one is disinforming, none of it is false, and if what you said is really the only difference, then no one would want to pay 60 a year,

cause that makes the psn on equal level to live, which it isn't, LOL, sorry i just read what you said again, LOL

i personally feel that the reason you pay for xbox live is because its better service..i have both ps3 and 360 and live is much better imo thant psn...its much easier to communicate with friends, invite friends to games, and its easier to make multiplayer matches with xbox live

The problem with that is these threads always turn into why XBL is a ripoff and why Microsoft is evil for making us pay for there services... I find it easier not to get into the arguments anymore (Even though I am very pro paying for Xbox live)

i love how people use the excuse "oh the better friends list and the marketplace exclusive DLC". Well in case you haven't noticed you can still use those features on a silver account, meaning the only thing you're actually paying for is online multiplayer, which the other consoles and pc already have for free. yes, microsoft is ripping you off don't try to make up an excuse and hide it.

You dont have to pay $100 for adapter, is a lot easier and cheaper to move your router and modem. And just get you live suscripcion from amazon 13 month for about $40.

Microsoft provides all code for LIVE and Achievements. Means the devs don't have to worry about creating chat, friends list (invites), the whole 9. IMO this is what your paying for. Although, I don't seem to recall any game on LIVE breaking the 32 player barrier, but maybe your $ is being put to good use LMAO.

Well actually you dont do you because how can a "Functional cross game invite system" be functional on a silver account? But anyways, im quite dissatisfied with paying £40 ($80) / year for Gold seeing as only 2 games I have are actually playable online and dont like lag hell (Halo 3 and BF: Bad Company). The rest are impossible to play due to having to guess where the opposition will teleport to in order to shoot them (COD, Far Cry 2, GTAIV)

That's just you, I have no lag

Anyways, I like xbox live, and dude...it's only about 14 cents a day. It's pretty good =D

And PS3 fanboys...gtfo, there are flaws with PSN too but you don't see usgoing into your forums and saying how sony is evil and is out to steal all of our money (or do you? I dunno =P I don't go around trolling...unlike some people*cough* you*cough*). I'm not out to get Sony, I think the PS3 is a wonderful platform even though you might think I'm just some misinformed 360 fanboy. So why can't you PS3 fanboys just GTFO or shut the hell up aboutthe 360?

ive had live since the original xbox. i love it and its totally worth the 50 bucks. now i am pro xbox how ever my brother is pro sony and has a ps3. now he prefers the ps3 over my 360 but HE HAS TOLD ME MANY TIMES THAT LIVE IS BETTER THAN PSN. ive never played a ps3. never will. so i will take his word on it. the only thing sony is my 1080p/24p 120hz tv. KDL-40W4100. but to answer your question. i love the dashboard party system we got with the NXE. no matter if your friend is playing a game different from you, or watching a movie you can chat freely. more people to destroy online. anyway let me go new cod waw map pack just came available.

Reading some of the stuff here has really got me to think why am I really paying for live. Sure, I enjoy being able to play with my friends online but I could do that as well with a Wii or a PS3. I have tried the Wii's online and I didn't really like it. Playing games like SSBB or MKWii was a nightmare, endless lag. Since I don't have a PS3, I really can't say anything about the quality of their service but from what I've read, it seems good but missing some functionality like the party system ans similar stuff. I guess we're paying for updates to the XBL system (like the party system) but silvers can get that as well. Most games don't have dedicated servers which causes some games to have terrible lag if host doesn't have a good connection. I'm not complaining about having to pay for XBL but if you think about it, we're paying to be able to play online on the 360. Who knows if Sony's and Nintendo's decision to keep online gaming free will, at a later point, force MS to stop charging for XBL.

while I agree with the fact that XBL should be free as well, I have seen the XBL service to be less laggy and faster than the PSN. Even in games like COD4 where I believe it's player hosted, PSN is a nightmare to play on. 60 bucks a year is not bad for a good service but it could have been free for what they are giving us. Next gen it'll be free or they'll lose a lot of ppl since Sony will most likely learn from its mistakes just like MS had the chance to learn with the original Xbox
