When people talk about "best rpg" why don't they mention Borderlands ?

I've been having a blast with this game, I got it reccomended to me by one of my close friends, and yesterday I was playing in an Xbox Live party with 8 people who were all playing Borderlands, the connection was perfect, and we were just having so much fun, laughing, cracking jokes, and killing skags and midget psychos.

It reminds me of Diablo II alot, but at the same time, it's really original, and I think it is easily one of the best games out at the moment.

Generally, the best RPG will have a plot. Also, Borderlands seems more shooter than RPG, though it is quite fun.

you can call it a rpg but there are so many other rpgs that are so much deeper that they blow boarderlands out of the water. I love boarderlands, but best rpg? Not close.

The RPG elements take a backseat to the Shooter features. It's more of a FPS with RPG elements. Not saying it's not a good RPG, it's just better as a shooter.

Boarderlands is awesome, and I would also consider it an RPG, but Id say most just don't see it as one.

A lot of people do look at DIablo 2 as an RPG, but I am definitely not one of them. I always look at an RPG as a game where game play takes a back seat. It isn't the primary focus and the main reason to play. For example changing Diablo 2's game play to a turn-based style would completely change the primary part of the game, but if Mass Effect (1) was to be the same as Knights of the old Republic (not entirely turn-based, but close to) it wouldn't be the much different.

You play Diablo 2 and, for this thread, Borderlands for its game play. You play an RPG more so for its story and characters. A prime example is Final Fantasy. The gamep play in those have beeing going through wild changes, but you still ultimately play them for the story and characters.

How I view RPGs will ultimately change though because game play is gaining such a huge focus in RPGs. For example Mass Effect 2. I almost can't call it a RPG. If it didn't have the story it would be almost on the same level as a 3rd person Call of Duty with a cover system. And I honestly think that is the eventual path of all RPGs. So right now with my views I would not consider Borderlands a RPG, but in the future it quite possibly be one, but not on the same level as older RPGs.

For me an RPG isn't just about having the right story or 'RPG elements', it's about being a truly immersive game on top of that. I love Borderlands and think it's a great game but it's missing too much to be considered a top RPG. The story is terribly weak and there are just too many other, better RPGs to consider for any sort of 'best RPG' list.

Well what you have to understand is that there are two different types of RPGs, JRPG (Japanese RPG) and WRPG (Western RPG)

JRPG include like Final Fantasy, Pokemon, and Kingdom Hearts. Most JRPGs are turn based. (Square Enix=JRPG)

WRPG include Mass Effect, Fallout, as well as Borderlands. (Bethesda/Bioware=WRPG)

I prefer JRPG because they tend to follow a very driven story with a great character lineup and more then half JRPGs turn out to be almost like a movie. As to WRPGs that have more open world interactions with the character and the story. And to me Mass Effect could almost be considered a Thrid Person Shooter, as well as Borderlands being almost considered a FPS.

So sorry but in my opinion I couldn't define Borderlands as one of or the best RPG. My opinion of course.

TheMightyHoov
a rpg doesnt have to have a story. Several varieties of RPG also exist in electronic media, including multi-player text-based MUDs and their graphics-based successors, massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs). Role-playing games also include single-player offline role-playing video games in which players control a character or team who undertake quests, and whose capabilities advance using statistical mechanics. These games often share settings and rules with pen-and-paper RPGs, but emphasize character advancement more than collaborative storytelling thats from wiki but you get my point some rpgs are driven by story some are by stats and some by both. borderlands definitly has the stats part.

I think you meant to add the word "still" between "were" and "turn". JRPGs are still mostly turn based just not so much anymore, but Tactical RPGs has kind of taking a back seat for awhile now.

I consider Borderlands to be an RPG but in no way is it one of the "best." You just can't compare it to the other RPGs on the market. Like everyone else has said, RPGs are more about story and being able to influence the world around you via your choices. I think Borderlands is a blast and I love playing it, but I would not consider it to be one of the best RPGs out there.

are you actually questioning Diablo 2 as an RPG? dont tell me that making ME1 turn based wouldnt really effect it, thats gotta be a joke Diablo 2 does have a great story and characters, granted they werent as well developed as ME1 was, but theres a slight difference in the years they were developed. D2's story was told very well through the cutscenes, and the characters (both evil and good) very quite dynamic (evil moreso than good)

Wow really? After I was agreeeing you, that's cool. Great job being an ass. I was be very cool when I was writing that message, whatever way you took that you failed in doing so because that wasn't the way I intended it to be taken. I wasn't criticizing you, I was actually agreeing with you. I just thought you meant to put "still were" instead of just "were" that's it....no big deal...geez don't be so sensitive.

And btw Chaos really? I never seen where any of this was directed torwards you in anyway.

I was actually agreeing with what you said just thought you made a mistake, don't have to be an ass about it. I don't see where I typed the same exact thing as you except for when I said "not so much anymore" but if you didn't make a mistake then why would say that you wish JRPGs were turn based? JRPGs have most always had a Tactical fighting system.

And btw Chaos was any of this directed torwards you in anyway?

beauty of an open forum, you want to directly address someone without other comments; PM them, or just ignore what other people say

I really don't think you have to explain to me about an open forum, there is actually nothing you could explain to me that I would care about. The point is that your post had absolutely nothing to do with the topic of the thread when you posted what you did, you were just trying to bash me for what I said, I guess just because you're really bored and finding great laughs from peoples posts on gaming thread I don't know. The next time maybe you should keep a thread on topic (which I know I'm not right now either) and if someone is responding to a post of mine let it stay between the two or more people it's involved with instead of stepping in.

Now since were both creating wasted space on this thread by going through this stupid back and forth non sense I'm going to end this..atleast from me so go a head and reply to this but I doubt I'll reply back so make sure you get all the bashing out your system on me right now since I wont be replying back to your next response.

???? dude Borderlands gives you a tiny tree that you can upgrade with a random gun system. Yeah its pretty cool but when you put that up against a game like Fable. A game where you can go and change almost everything about yourself. I personally haven't played Mass Effect but I do know that you can change things within the story line. Borderlands only offers you a tiny skill tree, and a random gun system that is pure luck.

Yeah the game is fun. I had a lvl 60 sniper. Although the game can basically be called a sci-fi fps with a few quirks. Just because you put one skill tree in a game doesn't make a good rpg.

Because it's hardly an RPG. Sure, you can choose from a few different "c.lasses" but in the end they're pretty much the same with different skins and one special perk. This game was ALL ABOUT guns, and more guns. Shooting. Tons of it and cool boss fights. It's a great game. Co-op is where it's at.

Err.. Fable is a pretty bad example... but it's more "RPG" than Borderlands because of the evil or good... and playing house.
