It might notbe as powerful as the latest PC but that's not going to stop it from lasting about 5 more years...sony won't be able to make a PS4 that fast though so MS might wait even longer. The 360 still has a TON of life left in it...so I wouldn't sit around waiting for them to announce a 3rd Xbox system ANYTIME soon. 2011 maybe not 2007.
I agree with the general consensus here. I think MS has just gotten the XBOX 360 wagon rolling with the catalog getting a big boost this year and continuing next year. They are probably internally thinking about what the next console should be like and do, but don't expect that they have to ship anything out till the beginning of next decade. Furthermore, MS doesn't necessarily want to release the 3rd generation of the XBOX quickly to allieniate the millions of existing 360 owners.
The next console will continue down the PowerPC path that the existing 360 is using so backward compatibility will be a non-issue, however you don't want people who've spent significant money on console and games to feel like they wasted their money because a new console is getting release.
MS firmly believes that the console has a strong 5 year life of active game development, from then onlward it might taper a bit and people might start getting ready for a new console..
i have a pc, had the xbox, and i think ill buy the next console, but i dont want the 360 bc its already getting old, and the graphics are as good as a 7800 while new pc games are much better yet thousands more play the games on 360. but im not getting into an argument, im just curious when do you think the next console will come out? there hasnt been any new news, so i would think atleast 2 years?ncderek360 will last at least 4 more years.it has much more suport then the xbox did. plus it will make ms some money soon. i think they will keep it arround for at least 4 more years. sony plans on the ps3 to be out ten years.so look for ms to hang it out with them as long as they can
well i dont think we will see anything till at least 2010/11 just for the fact that even down with unreal they dont have any plans to start the full development of they next engines untill late next year and possibly 2009. i dont think they will make any moves untill they know more about the next gen of xbox and play stations, because that and the future of pc graphics cards is what it will be desgined for. as they will no doubt be working closley with the consoles developers to make sure they get the most out the kit, its way off, the current consoles are only just getting into they prime, i doubt anyone is in a rush to dish out a new console conidering how much they usually cost to bring out a new piece of kit
I dont know about anyone else but I love the way Metroid Prime 3 handle's with the Wii mote and since Im a huge FPS fan... well lets just say if the next Nintendo console has online done right and graphics are on par with other consoles or close enough well I will defenetaly spend £400/$600 on that console.
But if this generation repeats it self next generation I wont be as stupid and will just upgrade my PC.
MS can't even get the 360 right (technically) and you already want a new MS console??? Let them handle the RRoD and other issues with the current console before you start wishing for a new one.SavoyPrime
I have to agree with this guy. Although Im always ready for a new console!!....;)

thing is about the wii is they put all they eggs in one basket with they motion sensors, when really sony or ms cud bring out they own for games as well at the drop of a hat. nintendo made a big mistake not steppng up the graphics as much, they touch screens on the ds and motion sensor is all good invoations for games but i think its really only a matter of time before the ideas get pinched to be honest, birng out a new wirless controller with motion sensors and update the console over net to handle its driversand then ur in business.
It hasn't even been out 2 years and you're looking for a new console!Dracula68
I know, LOL. It should be out in a long time.
it's possible that the consoles this generation may have a longer life than the previous consoles. Instead of a 5 year life-span, I'm betting that the Xbox360 and PS3 will stay around for 7 years. The introduction of downloadable content, online multiplayer, the abilty to play with friends in other states... will make the games now give the consoles longer life.
When the new Xbox comes out, I hope we can simply keep our current hard-drives and put it on the new one, allowing us to save our game progress, gamerscores and tags, and other records.
I think more like 5 years. The original X-box died prematurly because the PS2 was released a year before it, and they couldn't catch up in sales. MS released the 360 before the PS3 this round so it's life span will be much longer.IMODarthKaloi agree with constant live and system updates i think this system will be supported for a long time, i mean its coming up o nits second year of being out, there gonna support this way longer and better than they did with xbox one now that they have experience
In answer to your question, I actually think MS will release their next system in the holiday season od 2010, five years after the Xbox 360. I know that is sooner than the consensus, but here's my logic: By 2009/2010 the momentum will have shifted towards the PS3. Don't be fanboys and scream at me, I'm a huge Xbox fan and I don't currently own any Playstation. However, I think that when the PS3 technology becomes cheaper, casual gamers will go with the Playstation brand name even though the 360 (I believe) will still have a superior game library as far as real gamers are concerned.
At that point, MS will pull the rug out from under Sony's feet with a brand new console that blows the technology within the PS3 out of the water. Sony is likely to be behind in development (MS already has a 1 year head start) and MS will have an even greater lead in the next gen cycle than they did this time. In short, MS will have a brand new console out while Sony will have to make do with the 4+ year old PS3. If you were buying a console with that choice, which would you go for? I doubt I'd be willing to wait 18 months for PS4, that's for sure.
So there's my answer: Fall 2010.
For the record to the thread starter, if you get a 360 now you will get one without the reliability issues of the past (ie one with the Falcon chipset) and an awesome library of games that will go from strength to strength. Though the 360 (and PS3 for that matter) is technically weak against today's PCs (when are consoles not weak against a top of the line PC?) but the games are truly phenomenal and you will be selling yourself short if you miss them.
