my current setup runs the VGA cable into the monitor, then I have two couplers and a cable so I can plug my headphones directly in, or use PC speakers.

The sound comes from the Red and White cables, Left and Right audio channel. Use the adapter that came with it and plug it into your speakers if they don't have the Red and white audio inputs. If that doesn't work then you will need some different speaker setup.
