You all know that Halo 3 is 360's most successful game. Following the game was Halo: ODST, which introduced a new story, sort of, and a new graphic style. Then there is Halo Wars, which is completely separate, and now there is Halo Reach. I can tell from just watching the trailers, that Reach won't fill Halo 3's shoes. I blame it all on the new storylines. What has happened to Master Cheif. Ever since he dissapearded, Halo has changed. I think it was better when he was the protagonist of the games.

the mastercheif has zero personality and im glad bungie are ending his story for now. you can't really tell how the game is going to play out storywise by just looking at one trailer.

It hasn't "changed," it just that they don't wanna do the same things. Not everybody out there wants the same rinse and repeat formula for every Halo game. ODST had good ideas, but the lack of online killed it. I think Halo Reach will be better than Halo 3 to be honest. Sure, Master Chief won't be in it, but it'll be great. The online is new and it looks amazing. Answer me this, would you rather pay $65.54 on a game with the EXACT same multiplayer, or get something fresh? Almost every Halo fan is getting this game because they want something new. They don't want the same thing; it'd be like paying $65.54 for a new story.

Halo isn't fun because of the Master Chief and judging Reach before the game has even come out simply for not having the Master Chief is pretty stupid.

All the "new storylines"? I read The Fall Of Reach 9 years ago, before you probably even played video games. The whole idea of Reach is far from new man. And I've been waiting on a game based on that battle for a long time, so get excited. Chief is cool and all, but you have to understand that this game series is not about one person, it's about an entire war.

I have no doubt he will, but that is fine with me. As long as the other characters have great personalities and are awesome then I am fine. I mean I love Half-Life 2 for its characters and the main one never speaks. I could care less about any of the Halo characters, well maybe a bit for the arbiter but that is only be his voice actor is Keith David. Now the reason I say he probably will be a mute (or close to) is because the character is essentially supposed to be us, which will be different for each person.

You can be a female in campaign though. Why would they put that option in there? Just to make different noises when being shot? - I dont think so It can go mass effect style and feature romance. Bungie said they were doing stuff in the campaign that will impress a lot of folks. Maybe im overthinking things and he/she will be mute after all :P

They can impress without a voice, like I said before Half-Life 2. But if your Spartan is voiced, I will be happy as long as it is not the guy that does Nathan Drake, Desmond, and the guy from Shadow Complex. I could really care less for his voice.

Now that is true they could do something like Mass Effect. And actually the guy from Mass Effect would be perfect because he fits the lines of a Spartan (like MC) perfectly. He sucks as expressing emotion so he would fit right in. Really I would not want him to be the voice of the Spartan at all...

I honestly can't wait. I got tired of the chief after Halo 2 so I don't care what, new, character there is in Reach. Im not saying that I hate the Chief, which honestly, I liked the Chief and he's good and all. I just think getting a New Character would be great IMO, even though we all have to wait until Reach comes out to see If this new "Character" is awesome. Plus, Master Chief was boring as a Rock on Halo 3 (IMAO).

People just hate change, don't they? lol.

That just adds to my dislike to ODST. Don't get me wrong he is a pretty good voice actor, but his voice never changes and he seems to play around the same role again and again in every game. He currently is just like the cliche bald headed hero in video games. Way over used and lame...

His name is Nolan North. He really is a great actor in Uncharted. But that's the problem. He isn't flexible. Every game he has a role in, you aren't hearing that character, The New Prince in Prince of Persia, Romeo in ODST, (I haven't played that game I had no idea he was in there) etc. You are hearing NATHAN DRAKE. It's a problem for me, as it does tend to break immersion.

Well I can stand the same voice actor again and again, but that is primarily from Bioware games. But those voice actors that are always in Bioware games are not in like 4 games a year and usually not a main character in any of them. That is my problem with Nolan North. He is not only in so many games in one year, but he is also the main character in almost all of them. I wouldn't mind hearing his voice in multiple games, but when his voice is what I hear for like 40-80% of the game and in each game then there is a big problem.

Ah. Well I didn't read the books, just glazed over summaries. Too bad, I was hoping The Pillar of Autumn was on the ground and the last mission would involved helping the Chief defend it until near take off time. Oh well. I'd still be shocked if we don't see MC at some point, somehow.

I could see them either having a voice that comes through radio chatter or maybe you see a view screen that has MC on it. I could see them doing that just to get MC in there somewhere. I really hope they don't though because from what I can tell Bungie is actually going to try and take Halo to a new level and a newer direction (even if slightly). If they throw MC back in there somehow, It would just seem a little bit like they can't let go of their old ways, which could effect the game.

What do you mean "...won't fill Halo 3's shoes."? Halo Reach seems like a more mature game, and because of that, is destined to have more memorable parts. Halo Reach gives me the excitement and anticipation Halo CE gave me. This game looks BETTER than Halo 3 in every way. Just because Master Chief isn't present, doesn't mean the new characters are going to be bad.

The reason why Master Chief was alsways so silent and you never got to see his face was because he is meant to be YOU. SO, wherever YOU go HE will be there ;]

I agree, I have no idea why anyone would care if the MC is gone. Playing as the elite was better than playing as him even since you had a cloak and better allies with shields. I'm hoping that the new game gives us some better characters, the first three Halo games only did a good job with the Arbiter and Johnson in the first game (him getting his ass kicked all the time and then getting killed was not bad ass like the character should be).

Exactly. Reach is part of the Halo Universe. People get so caught up on one main character of the story arc and they fuss and whine when they don't show up in one of the games.

I hope the MC makes an appearance, but I would like to play as only one character this time. Halo: Reach -- finally, no dual wielding, no equipment, no four grenade types. Reach is like the Halo universe mixed into one entity. It will be the end all. Dual wielding was wonky to use. (You could hold three weapons when dual wielding, but had to drop one to change and no grenades.) It should have been purely aesthetic. Equipment seemed gimmicky. (Why one use? Why so many types?) The new abilities will work better and you won't have to run around to get them. Four grenade types was too many. (Why four?) Back to basics: two types are plenty. Reach is like Halo 1 and Halo 3 mixed which happened to be the best ones IMO.

They should show the Pillar of Autumn's jump from Reach. It doesn't have to be a part of the gameplay. It won't affect or ruin the game in any way IMO. But this would go a long way to tying up the story and bringing it full circle to lead it right into Halo CE. It could be the tag scene at the end of the credits if you beat it on Legendary. Whatever your opinion of the Master Chief is, he is an iconic character and somewhat of a mythical one in the mythos of the Halo Universe. So it would only be appropriate to mention or show him in some way in Halo Reach to give perspective of its story with the story of the Master Chief with which everyone is so familiar. This is Bungie after all, and their supposed last and definitive Halo game. They did the same when they showed a quick shot of the In Amber Clad following Regret's Carrier into Slipspace during the opening drop of ODST. It wouldn't be unlike the final scenes of Star Wars Episode III setting things up for the original trilogy.

I wish BUNGIE just concentrate on different games now, HALO was awesome but HALO ODST and HALO WARS sucked, iwas happier withwhat they said before, that they'd end the trilogy(and the game) after HALO3(when it was good), now i hope that at least they finish the game with HALO REACH, one comparison about what can happen (to games, series, movies, etc, in general)The simpsons.

I agree. Master Chief was one of the most ridiculously contrived heroes I've ever come across. I welcome any changes that don't involve him. I'd really like to see a sequel to Halo Wars, actually, and then we could skip the painfully flag-waving G.I. Joe heroes, awful writing, and ridiculous story entirely and just focus on huge numbers of awesome creatures duking it out. MMMMMMM, Halo Wars.

I've hated all the Halo's up until ODST.. I just hated Master Chief as a character.. He was bland and boring.. I think making a more human character makes the game a lot better.. I'm pumped for Reach.. I already pre ordered it..

If you were kidnapped as a child, then pumped full of drugs, and then taught (from a young age) to fight and kill, I am pretty sure you would lose almost all of your humanity too. I mean what he was around 16 (or lower) years old when he actually became the MC. I do agree though that the MC (from the games) was super bland, but I really liked him a lot more from the books. He was essentially the same character, but the books made you understand him more. That and he talked more in the books, not a lot more but still more.

I'd rather fight with an army of Spartan Warriors than have the "last man standing" garbage again and have to deal with thick as mud marines!

I am with you on that, but I am sure the marines will still be idiots...

The tragic warrior-warrior-from-birth story that is used to justify almost every boring character these days in gaming is getting really lame at this stage. It's a paper thin excuse for lazy writing and bad character design/development. After playing all three main Halo games, I can safely say that I feel about the same level of connection to Master Chief as I did to the muffin I ate this morning on my way to work, and that has nothing to do with backstory. Good characters, and especially good protagonists, connect with their audience in a way that allows the audience to relate to them on some level and maybe even feel a little empathy for them. They don't need contrived background information to justify their boring, cliche existences. If a character needs a ton of backstory to justify why they bore you to tears, it's safe to say that character sucks. Sorry, Master Chief, it would appear that you fall into the suck category.

I think Reach will be a game changer for the series. You'll just need to give it a chance. Judging from the footage I've seen of the multiplayer it looks like bungie has listened to what the fans want and are making a great game. Master Chief or not, Reach will redefine the Halo franchise.

To be honest I never liked Chief. Halo 3 was my first Halo and it was ok but I just don't like it that well and I blame Chief for that. He just is not that likeable of a character imo for me cause he is in full armor and rarely says two words. I hate silent heroes! So when you have a faceless silent hero that is even worse. I am interested in Reach though and will check the beta for sure. I just hope the spartans have characters of their own and are not mindless Chief clones in different armors. Not hating on Halo as a whole though because there is no denying its popularity even if some of us do not enjoy it as much as others.

Backstory? The books take you through the life of MC. You experience what he experiences during the moment they happen. As I said I disliked the character as Bungie made him, but liked the character a lot in the books because to me he was a real person. The character in the books to me was completely different. What we saw in the games was a killer full of no emotion and one liners. The books make him out to be a thinker and a much more caring person. He cared for his fellow Spartans, but when it came down to it he did what the mission told him to do. None of this came through in the video games, but then again maybe Bungie never meant for his character to be like that.

So yeah I agree with you that MC is a terrible character in the video games, but the other MC in the books is actually a pretty good one. I am not saying the books make the video game character better because they don't. I consider them to be separate characters.
