I am trying to figure out which product will help keep my xbox from overheating and freezing. I was playing oblivion last night and the game froze with white lines coming across the screen. Is my xbox basically dead?

Don't buy a cooling system. They have been proven to make them worse.

I agree. Also, they void any warrenty you have which means you wouldn't be able to get them fixed or replaced.

In your situation I would just sent your 360 for repair/replacement once you get red ring. If you still want a cooling system for the one you get back from MS, go for one that is powered by USB and NOT THE TYPE THAT ATTACHES TO THE BACK OF THE SYSTEM OVER THE POWER INPUT.

Exactly. Just put your 360 in a ventilated area.

A specific one has been proven to make things worse (Nyko, the one that attaches to the back). Putting a fan near the 360 running off seperate power certinly wouldn't make anything worse. If your house is hot cause of the summer, it definitly would be a good idea to get the air moving around your 360 in some way.
