my bro bought a pro about a year ago and it screams when it has a disc in it, and i bought mine about a month ago and its not as loud. but i heard all the new 360's now have the smaller chip so they may be quieter too
probably the newest consoles made. there is a little press in flap on the box of the xbox's that you can check at the stores to see when it was manufactured. so you can look at them all and pick up the newest one. and i think the elite, premiums and cores (now arcade version) all have the same insides so it shouldnt matter which one you get but id get a premium or elite.
i got one on tuesday and i really dont notice it being on at all. however, i still have yet to put a game in it, so it might be louder then. I got one of the new ones with hdmi, i do think i got the old heatsink though :(
I would pick xbox 360 Elite, becouse I got it and it doesnt seem really loud, you can hardly hear the heat fan so I would pick that instead, plus it has HDMI you wont be sorry!:D anyway its just a thought and giving you heads up.....
p.s I havent gotten 3 red rings also for very long time looks promising,
I just got a new xbox 360 from microsoft. It was made on Sept 14th/07 and i dont find it as loud as my other one. On a side note the system still gets just as hot as the original.

omg, i got halo today and the thing sounds like a plane taking off when halo 3 is in the system. wtf. i waited 2 years to get my xbox 360 and they haven't even fixed this yet? at least i got hdmi (which there was NO mention of on the box)
