It depends if you want to only play guitar get GH3 but if u want to play with other instruments besides guitar(like drums or microphone) then go with Rock Band.
gh 3. better songs and you dont need other people to have fun. rock band hasnt even made a name for itself yet and theyre pricing it kinda high. guitar hero was the original, theres no comparison.

Are you aware that Red Octane basically stole Harmonix's game and gave the development rights to Neversoft.
And Harmonix (the original developers of Guitar Hero 1 and 2) are going on to make Rock Band? So while guitar hero is the original, this is technically the next installment from the original development team.
I'll stick with Guitar Hero, because it made it's proof, but also because I'm pretty scared of the huge pricetag Rock Band might get (think about all the accessories,,,300-400$?).

It's actually around 170$ for the 360 package with Game, Guitar, Mic, and Drums.
I was suprised when I found that out too, seems like a pretty good deal.

You didn't ask which one YOU should get. You asked which one we would get. If you had asked that, maybe people would have been able to give you some decent advice. I'm getting both. I already got Guitar Hero III, because II was amazing. I really want rock band because of the vocals and drum set. Plus the downloadable content looks endlessly amazing. If you want to experience something other than the guitar portion of the game, get Rock Band. If you don't have the money for both, I'd suggest getting Rock Band and then picking up the Guitar Hero III game without the guitar at some point in the near future.

as for the topic being discussed, i would get GH3 for the guitar and RB for the drums. Songs wise - GH3 hands down. RB is smth new (with the drums and mics n what not) therefore gettin that as well.
which is of more importance to you? rocking with a guitar to a gre8 song? or trying out a new musical 'sim' game with new 'instruments'? All boils down to what YOU prefer.
if you only want to play guitar then get guitar hero 3. Most of the songs are in both games but gh3 exclusive songs are way better than rock band exclusive songs. Rock band will also be more expensive.
also ask yourself these questions:
do I already have a guitar hero controller? the gh2 one will work with gh3
Do I have the coordination required to play drums? its a lot more challenging than a guitar hero game
Can i sing at least half decently? If you can't your friends will hate playing with you.

Also sence there is a special effects button in the rockband guitar, when using the the GHIII guitar in rock band you can't activate those effects.
