Who else is sick and tired of games trying to look photorealistic?

I can't stand it. There are so many games like COD4 that try to look photorealistic. news flash THEY DON'T. In turn, they end up looking like the most pixelated games on the market. I agree COD4 gameplay was awesome. But my point is, there are arcade games such as castle crashers, or even watchmen that look better. Sure they are basic games, but the colors are beautiful, and every thing on the screen is smooth, and not pixelated at all.

Of course this is my opinion, but lets discuss. No 12 year old bashing, how about some grown ups actually discussing games.

The grapics of a game try to tie in whith what the game is trying to make the player feel i.e. cod4 is going for realism there for the graphic style of the game must follow suit, castle crashers is a game that doesnt try to be realistic rather itgives the impression you are playing a cartoon through gameplay music and visual design. There are games out there like prince of persia that have went down a differrent route and took a more artistic apperance to add another dimension to the game. However i disagree with your point stating that your sick of it, it is what games try to do and yes at times the fps rate may drop and pixelate but this is all part of the process it will be many years before any game can truly say that it has acheived true realism visually but by then we will have entered the 3D age where graphics may take a back seat and the player experience is first in line (just as the wii has done already). Project natal is another example of this you can see is with that milo game *peodphiles paradise* cough, the graphics and gameplay are coinciding with one another to create the ultimate experience where a player becomes so submerged in a game that they forget they are infact playing one. Now im not sayingthis milo will tottaly submerge you as its the very first of its kind but the graphics in that game show what the future holds and on the other end of the spectrum you have uncharted 2 boasting some great graphics and what looks like a good shooter. I see your point but you cannot argue with cod4 as the visuals try to be realistic but at no expense of gameplay only when a games visuals take front stage over gameplay should you really complain that its getting annoying.

Truthfully I can see his point, anyway you look at it todays 'Photorealistic' game will look like tomorrows jagged eyesore. But an artistic style has a quaint look that can be replayed even decades from now. Take a look at that 'amazing' visual feast from last generation and see for yourself. On the path to realism it is a never ending road to improvement, in regards to visuals their are countless improvements that can be made, not to mension AI, multi-threaded processing, physics analysis...etc...etc.

No, not really. I enjoy when a game goes beyond those boundaries but I certainly don't hold it against a game when it doesn't. Especially when it's not in the game's best interest such as the Call of Duty series. Besides, there are beauties of this world that just can't be captured any other way than photo realism.

I am just saying, when i spend 4 grand on a tv, i don't want it to look like garbage. That's why I bought a blu ray player. castle crashers looks amazing. call of duty looks like garbage. It's just the way it is. In this day and age there should not be excessive amounts of pixelization. Look at the watchmen games. They don't look like cartoons, they have a somewhat realistic look, but all characters, costumes, and etc etc are smooth. And for the person who said about the wii or whatever. I have a wii, that system can produce no where near as smooth of shapes as the 360 can.

As I said, COD4 was a very fun game, but the graphics should have tried to be less pin point, and just smoothed out. I enjoyed the game, it's just hard for me to say that the "best looking game" is also one of the most pixelated.

P.S. gears of war is somewhat lifelike, but doesn't have these issues.

And as far as 3d goes, I hope that doesn't take off unless it is done right. Unless it truely looks like something does outside, and not like the awful 3d you see in theaters, that is the only way it could work.

No one is making you play them. Alot of people enjoy them. That is if the game play is any good. Besides there are plenty alternativs. And thats just part of next gen. consuls. You can always go back to N64 or buy a Ds or PSP.

Then it seams like your contradicting yourself. Besides they have to start somewhere to get better. Look at Crysis for pc it looks fan freaking tastic. If you can play it on high settings.

no for $1000 you can get a decent entry level set. For 4 grand you can get arguable the best tv ever made. So I don't have to sacrafice black levels, color accuracy, pixelization, or anything else. And that's why.

how are my standards to high? a friggin xbla game meets my standards. All i'm saying is instead of trying to make a game look so realistic it brings out flaws, they should smooth things out like they did in watchmen, which still looks lifelike. And I was just commenting how castle crashers has no pixelization problems, yet COD4 has many.

alot of wii games aren't photorealistic.

This is the next-gen trend, most games are going to focus on big worlds and realistic graphics...It sucks because I too like 2D games, cel-shaded graphics, and even puzzlers; but you usually have to resort to portable consoles for those...

but there are some games coming out to aid your woes:

Brutal Legend

Jak and Daxter 4

Guitar Hero 5 / DJ Hero

Metroid: Other M

Super Mario Galaxy 2

any of the new LEGO games

Metal Slug 7

They are going to keep trying to make graphics as close to real life as they can but then, if they succeed what will they do if they try to make something like a dragon. Dragons aren't real so how could anyone make a dragon look like real life if there is no such thing.

What will probably happen is they somehow put people into games, not people but what they look like perfectly, and use real scenery, then have one really fake dragon trying to kill you. It would look dumb.

They are going to keep trying to make graphics as close to real life as they can but then, if they succeed what will they do if they try to make something like a dragon. Dragons aren't real so how could anyone make a dragon look like real life if there is no such thing.

Developer: That idea's gold! We should use it! Hey, you, Publisher!

Publisher: Yeah?

Developer: We have an excellent idea that we created ourselves!

Publisher: Oh, yeah?

Developer: We going to make it into a game and you can publish it!

Publisher: Sounds great.

Profit.

i agree with the tc, bad company compared to cod 4 is no competition in my opinion, the smoke looks better, the explosions look better and the soldiers look better, it is the same with far cry 2, red faction guerilla, photo realistic graphics means an un-interactive enviroment i know which i prefer

This is why I purchased a HDtv, PS3 and 360. These are advertised as "Next Gen/HD Consoles", so yes I want to see better graphics. If I didn't care for graphics, I would have stuck with the consoles of the past.

It is defintaly a choice of art sty1e. Would you want Call of Duty 4 to use any other art sty1e but realism? It wouldn't make sense.

Lots of other games don't use that sty1e. Find those and play those if it really bugs you. There are games on the PC like ArmA 2 that do actually look photorealistic, you just don't see them to often on the 360 because the 360 usually cannot handle those graphics. To be fair, there are only 2-3 games on the PC that look photorealistic.
