Who else thinks a 9.0 is to low for Skyrim?

I mean, besides glitches, is there really anything else wrong with the game? Because if there isn't, then why the hell did they mark off so many points? I mean, a 9.0 is the bare minimum for it to be considered superb and I just don't understand why they didn't rate it a 9.5 or something. My main question is, if all the glitches they complained about were patched (which I'm sure they're in the process of fixing right now) then what? It just makes no sense to me at all... and the reason I'm posting this is because I truly believe Skyrim deserves a way higher score then just a 9.0.

For those who have the game, are the glitches really that annoying? I haven't encountered any from my experience (I've only played through 1st quest, awaiting for my lcd monitor to arrive till I play it again) and I just want to know if theres any other significant flaws? (without spoiling it)

I believe it got a 9.0 due to the lack of shotguns. This had been mentioned in press releases early on but failed to materialise in the final product.

If you've already assigned a score to a game you haven't really played...Doesn't the score given by someone who has played the game matter? Different people are going to have different opinions of the game, a review score is not a set-in-stone fact, it's an opinion.

Well actually, according to gamespot, their reviews are not just opinions. Here is what they say in their FAQ section of how their rating system works:

"Wait, reviews are just opinions. Right?"

"Actually, we don't think so. We make no excuses for our verdicts about games and believe our reviews stand for themselves. While our reviews, of course, do contain an element of subjectivity to them, we see the process of reviewing games as one that primarily involves the reporting of facts. To an extent, we naturally color these facts based on our own experiences of having spent much time playing other games in the past, but we make every effort to look at every game on its own merits, and we describe each game in the most factual terms possible. To this end, in the rare event that one of our reviews contains a factual inaccuracy, we will correct the inaccuracy and will acknowledge it in an editor's note that's appended to the end of the review."

And that's exactly why I brought this up because reviews are not supposed to be just "opinions", especially if they are coming from a well known source for games such as this one. Now to a certain extent however, I agree with you that it's not a set in stone fact, but I think if we simplify our game's scores to .5 (such as 7.0, 7.5, 8.0, 8.5, etc) then I think the system would work better. I'm very picky when it comes to games, and to me a 9.0 is the bare minimum for me...

If you are only playing games that other people assign a certain score to you are missing out and not forming your own opinions about what games you may like. If all game review scores were fact then they would all be consistent...The review guidelines make a point to lay that on the line, but the review itself can be entirely factual and the score is something that is intangible, it is not a fact.

Despite Gamespot saying that their reviews aren't just opinions, in reality, that is exactly what they are. The content of the review itself may be reporting on fact and whatnot, but there's still got to be elements where they have to form an opinion on whether or not the content of the game is good or not. And the actual numerical score is most certainly a subjective opinion.

This is what an entirely objective review look like(worth checking out, its funny):

Ok, well Gamespot wont let me link to it(?), but google 'objective review of final fantasy xiii'.

So all in all, while I'd score the game a 10/10, I wont begrudge somebody their opinion so long as its an informed opinion.

No, they're not. Considering this is definitely worthy of at LEAST a 9.5, I don't think a 9.0 is enough at all.

Agreed, but what I was getting at was that gamespot (as well as other sources like IGN) is a more reliable place to go to check game ratings then what your friend thinks of it, for example. These reviews are from professional gamers who know what makes a good game and we can trust their reviews and rely on them. I mean, I don't think Skyrim deserves a 10 (that's kinda pushing it) but definitely higher then a 9.0...

Scores mean nothing. Just because this site applies a rating, it means nothing to how you'll feel once you experience it for yourself. This site gave Perfect Dark Zero a 9.0. That's much higher than I would've scored it. I really didn't like PDZ. They gave Assault on Dark Athena a 7.0. I really liked Dark Athena. I enjoyed it much more than Perfect Dark Zero. See my point? Scores mean nothing. Actually read the whole review and see if it sounds like a game you'll enjoy. If it does, buy it. Ignore the score.

And thats your opinion. Everybody's got one.

I kinda see what you're saying, cuz a mere 9.0 makes it seem like the game is great, but not as completely awesome as it is, and you want this game you like to be rated in a way that will get it the recognition/sales it deserves. I get that. The wise thing for somebody to do would be to look at multiple reviews, as no one place will ever have the same opinion as you 100% of the time, but unfortunately people dont do that nearly as often as they should. People take singular reviews way too seriously, but fail to realize that not every game will affect somebody in the same way it does yourself.

You, in turn, are taking this review a little too seriously. Overall, its still scored incredibly high on average. Metacritic has it at a 96, which is damn near as high as a game can be expected to score on an average. I think while the Gamespot reviewer may not be as enamored with the game as much as some of us, its still getting the recognition it deserves on a whole. I mean, you may not agree with a 10/10 score, but its gotten lots of them, and I'm inclined to agree with them, as this is such a monumentally addictive and quality title. In fact, I'm regretting writing all this as I could be playing!

Yeah the main one's I check are gamespot, IGN and gametrailers. I was pretty shocked to see GT gave it a 9.3... but that's acceptable, but I just think a 9.0 is way off from what it should've gotten. The other reason I made this post was to check with you guys if there were other flaws in the game other then glitches? I hope there isn't.

Dude, the game isn't absolutely perfect. Its got its flaws. I could sit here and name quite a few of them and things they could do to improve the experience, but to do so without writing 100x that amount about the great stuff would be criminal. Bottom line is that what the game does right completely outweighs any negatives to the point where these flaws are ignored by me for the most part. The improvements over Oblivion are innumerable. There's hardly anything that hasn't been tweaked or completely redone for the better. Its THE definitive open-world, single-player RPG of not only this gen, but all-time. And to further that, its my favorite game ever as of now.

As far as the glitches go, I haven't experienced that many. New Vegas on release was 10x worse, easily. There's definitely some, but nothing thats game-breaking or a bothersome issue. Its minor things. And I'm sure plenty of this stuff will get patched too, if little glitches bother you that much. Some of its actually kinda funny.

this game should have gotten a 10. GTAIV got a 10 and it wasnt perfect and couldnt even hold a candle to the super nova that skyrim is. Yes, skyrim has its buggs but beth always fixes them. GS's review of this game was pure garbage. Not only because of the 9.0 but also because of the content written or statted in the review. The size, scope and quality of this game cant be matched. That new feeling you get from new games or systems is on steroids when you play this game. So i can over look a temporary buggy menu or the charactor detail when it comes to staves and dule weilding for now. I'm sure it will be pacthed along with other things soon. Anyway, this game feels like a MMO apart from having real people in the world. This is a place i enjoy traveling, questing, and exploring. Its not a bleek experince like you got from oblivions redundant world with its cookie cutter quest. This game for what it is, bad parts and all is not only a 10 but goes beyond the normal point system and demands a 100. People who dont like this game either dont like the genere period in which no great rpg will change their minds or they are extremly superfical and see one problem and they are like johnning crying wolf. Or they have just read reviews and havent played and are thus just trolling. I wont EVER be this happy or excited for another game unitl EOSVI comes out. In a million year :( I shutter to think what EOSVI will be like.

I really did like Oblivion. I'm a fan of open-world RPG's in general, sothat was inevitablebut Skyrim makes Oblivion look BAD. No joke. You will not be able to go back, ever. Its such a dramatic improvement. Just a few of the improvements:

- The overworld has so much more diversity in terms of different environments. Each area of the game looks and feels different, including the architecture of the towns and cities. And the landscape itself is so much more hand-crafted. There's so many 'Kodak moment' areas when traveling around its ridiculous.

- The dungeons are likewise very unique and hand-crafted feeling. This is one of the biggest improvements over Oblivion. Things dont feel copy-and-pasted anymore and there's a larger variety in types of dungeons.

- The enemies have all been thoroughly re-done. They all look great and many will strike fear into your heart with their power.

- The user-interface is a 1000x better. Its slick and easy to navigate while every item and spell is fully illustrated and viewable in 3D.

There's so many other improvements that I'm simply not willing to take the time to write about, but suffice to say, its leaps and bounds better than Oblivion.

Some people look at scores in order to judge just how good a gameis before buying, though. Especially this fall/winter season, there's boatloads of AAA titles coming out vying for customer's usually limited amounts of $$$.

I don't care what score GS gives games since their reviews are inconsistent and don't always make sense. But for those who do look at the scores when deciding whether or not to buy a game, a 9 certainly should not dissuade you.

It seems like GameSpot has been giving out a ton of low scores lately. A 7.5 for a Zelda game that got a Metascore somewhere in the 90's??

Ive moved from GameSpot reviews to IGN reviews.

An 8.0 would have been a far more suitable score for Skyrim given the amount of irritating bugs in the game.

Been playing the hell out of this game and really don't care about the score.

The content of the game is crazy but it's really nothing special.
