Hello everyone I am tempted to buy an intercooler and I am getting mixed reviews one side says crap uses to much energy and the other side says really good makes 360 quite (I am positive IGN was saying this was a must buy accessory)

So is it worth it?

PS does it void warrant once added?

I got one after my video card burned out (playing too much Elder Scrolls) to prevent my replacement unit from having the same fate. I got the stand unit (not the one that attaches to the back vents) and after a while I started noticing my games freezing or crashing in mid-play happening on a more frequent basis so I stopped using it and my freezes have pretty much stopped happening. I think the forced air probably had some negative effect on the internal system, in any case I now use the stand as just a stand without turning it on and everything is fine.

Truly, it was my own fault that my first unit's video card melted as I kept my xbox360 standing upright on carpet (which of course killed any ventilation from circulating) and I've discovered that the unit's natural vent system is sufficient as long as there is adequate vent space on ALL sides of the unit including under and above.

Had one but it made my xbox make funny noises so I took it off. I won't put any extra accessories on the box if it doesn't come from Microsoft.

I was told the intercooler unit that attaches to the vents will void your warranty because it relies on the consoles power source to function whereas the standing unit has it's own power outlet and because it doesn't leech from the xbox has no effect on the warranty.....but i'm not sure if this is 100%.

I picked up a cheap laptop cooler, put my xbox on it, and plugged the cooler into a usb port on a docking station nearby (so it doesn't draw any power from the xbox)

It's probably not awesome, but it can't hurt. Ever though of doing that? It's a cheap solution (like $10) that might work well

Warning: don't buy the Nyko Intercooler if you end up buying one. Those things will slowly kill your 360. I had gotten a new 360 and had an intercooler with it so I put it in (This was about a year or ago X|) after about a month I started getting red rings occasionally starting up the console...My 360 also got into disc killer mode and broke my Halo 3 and Guitar hero 3 X|. (There is a program, which should still be up, where if your disc is scratched by the 360 you can get a replacement for about 10 or 20$. But it only covers certain games, I had my Halo 3 replaced and I had to buy another copy of GH3)

It can also depend on where you live too. If you live in places like Arizona with high temperatures it may do good to buy a reliable intercooler or make sure your 360 has as much ventilation as possible. If you live up in usually cold places you shouldn't have to worry to much about an intercooler. For precautions you could also probably sit it next to a fan or if it's cold outside by a window to keep it cool other ways.

Oh, I almost forgot X|. Yes if you use some intercoolers like the Nyko one it will void your warranty. If you have a model recent enough they may have a little prong in the middle of the power input, If you try to put an intercooler with a wrong design, it won't fit.

I Had an intercooler, I soon took it off, it didn't seem to help, and no, it wasn't Nyko.

I'd say they are good in low vent areas, but useless in spaces, say, near a window that is open.

overall they are pretty handy, if you can stand the large noise they make, otherwise, you shouldn't

Check out the NEW Nyko intercooler, it uses a seperate power supply so it doesn't void your warranty. It turns on and off by heat sensing. I did a test using a new Jasper console and the GPU difference was about 10 degrees. This doesn't sound like much but it's almost a 10 percent decrease. The first test was after 15 minutes and the GPU was still going up slowly. The second picture was after 10 minutes with the intercooler, from test 1. The temperature was very stable with the intercooler, picture 2. It does make a little noise, but the fact it runs a little after the console is shut down is a nice feature!
