I have recently caught vampirism and now find myself unable to sleep and therefore level up knowing that i will become a vampire and for some reason start dying!!??

However i have began the "vampire cure quest" by speaking to the old lady in the mountains. She has told me to bring her 5 grand sould gems. At first i thought that was going to be easy, but after spending a good hour or so searching and only finding one!!!

I really want to carry on with the main quest but can't due to this stupid vampire thing!! Has any one else come across this and if so how have they dealt with it??

Whenever you fight a vampire, there is a chance you will catch porphyric hemophilia. It is a disease, and can be viewed in your active magical effects screen. Note that this is not vampirism. If you sleep while infected with porphyric hemophilia, you will get that message, and will start becoming a vampire. However, if you cure this disease before sleeping, it'll be gone, and is no longer a problem.

Porphyric hemophilia is a disease just like any other, and can be cured very simply. Praying at the altar in a church will cure all negative effects, including diseases. So, just go to church before you go to bed. :) The best way to prevent vampirism is to learn the "Cure Disease" spell (a very useful spell in any case). Most clerics in the cathedrals can teach Restoration spells, including Cure Disease. Just cast this spell after you've fought any vampires, and you'll always be safe.

If you've had porphyric hemophilia for longer than 72 hours and slept (I think) you'll actually acquire vampirism, which is much harder to get rid of. Which stage are you in?

I've had to load a previous save after sleeping because i have become a vampire and had the message. I don't know if it is to do with it but my character has red eyes and looks really ill!

Which church do i go to because i have just tried one and couldn't seem to be able to select "cure or bless" or something like that. Also when i go up to people who are asleep i have the option to feed. So i don't know exactly what stage i am at but i guess i am past the 72 hour mark.

Yeah, you're definitely a vampire. Talk to people in church about how to cure it, and it should get you on the quest to get rid of it. Be sure that you want to cure it, as I'm not sure there's any way to become a vampire again once it's cured (which might also be a good thing). I don't think there are any vampire quests (like in Morrowind), so I guess there's no great reason to continue being a vampire.

If you're a higher level, merchants who sell magical equipment may have grand soul gems in their inventory. This might be easier than finding them in dungeons.

Why don't you just "duplicate" the grand soul gems. That way it would be easier.

Even better, just become associate of the mages guild, then run around the halls and take em :)

Not sure if this is any help to you, but the way vampirism works in oblvion is:

stage 1- can walk around in sunlight, have some minor atrabute increase, and you look like bit of a freak.

if u dnt feed u will go to stage 2.

stage 2- no more sunlight for you, decent atribute increase, get some type of power cant rember what, and you will start look a quite ill now and people wont like u much.

if u again dnt feed u will go to the last stage, stage 3.

stage 3- die very quickly in sunlight, great atribute increase, get another power posiibly some type of chamealion, so ugly some shop owners wont sell to u.

evrytime u feed u go back to stage 1

What's wrong with being a vampire? Vampires are people too, and have feelings and everything. Stop bashing the vampires please.

Besides being a vampire actually suited my Khajiit Thief/Assassin very well, massive attribute boost when hungry. Just have a snack if you need to see someone. Besides who needs daylight anyway, the cover of darkness is quite useful in some lines of business.

If you want grand soul gems, they are lying around in many of the mages guilds. You could always "borrow" them.

ooooo ooooo ive got a story! story time! so, about 70 hours into the game i get vampirism, and im like wtf. i only had one or two gates of oblivion to close so i figured i would just deal with the vampirism and cure it later. so i close the rest of the gates to oblivion and i already finished the dark brotherhood and sealed the tomb, therefore i couldnt get one plant ingredient for the cure, forget the name of the plant. i go all around the land and get every single other ingredient, and by now im super tired of having vampirism, and i come back to that witch who says she can cure you who decides to attack me for trespassing, wtf! anyways i finally talk to her and she sais im still missing ONE ingredient. are you kidding me? so since all the doors to oblivion were sealed and so was that tomb i had no possible way of getting that plant. at that time i didnt have xbl so i couldnt download the cure and vampirism led to me quiting the game after 90 some odd hours. stupid vampirism.

It sucks that there's no vampire quests. That was such a cool thing to discover in Morrowind. In Oblivion, it's like, "Great. I'm a vampire now. Too bad there isn't anything to do as a vampire." They have anti-vampire quests in Oblivion; why can't they have pro-vampire quests? Imagine how cool it would be if, after becoming a vampire, you join a vampire cult, and go on a quest to destroy the Order of the Virtuous Blood. (The Order of the Virtuous Blood is a cadre of vampire hunters you can join in the game as a minor faction.) Of course, that would have required that Bethesda made a game where you get to make decisions that have consequences...which they didn't. The only way they could have made being a vampire any less interesting is if they'd just made it a racial choice in the beginning.

Yea, give us a Vampire Guild...here's hoping for DLC :)

Hmm.... I LIKED having Vampirism. It gave me added bonuses that were very helpful. Not to mention, I just kept it from getting so bad that I took damage from the sun by feasting on the sleeping homeless. :D

Alright easy fix for the most part. First of all you need the game of the year edition for xbox 360 or you need to download the expansion "assassins cave" or some name like that. I think the real name actually has an "L" in it. Anyway you add that and go south of leyawin. At the waters edge you will find an underwater entrance to this lair thing. In this lair you will find a journal that gives you the method for curing vamparism which differs from the one that you need to collect ingredients for.

Alternatively there is the option of finishing the quest you are doing. I will share very grave news with you first of all. The last ingredient needed is blood grass. This ingredient is not taken by the lady. Its a glitch I have yet to solve. I think it is just a problem for some games so you may want to try it out. If you are like the person (sorry I forget your name) that has closed all the gates look next to some of them for the blood grass. It does grow right next to the gate some of the time.

Anyway hope this helps at least some;)

Seeming everyone covered the vampirism bit enough... just a semi-related tip: I got sick of the 'hunt for ingredient' quests pretty early in the game so now I just pick up everything I see along my way (including inside oblivion) and then have 20 or so of everything stored in the houses I bought. Then when one of those 'I need ogre teeth' quests comes up I just go to my home, pick up what I need and go finish it. Scout moto: Be Prepared.
