I've noticed a serious decline in original, unique AAA games recently, expecially on the 360. Call of Duty 4, Halo 3, GTA 4, Geometry Wars 2, Soul Caliber 4, Fortza Motorsport 2, they are all sequels! Where's the original content? C'mon gmaespot, restore my faith in the 360's lineup - lay down some original games.NINTENGOON
Since when is Gamespot responsible for the 360's lineup?
what bout : dead space , too human, mirrors edge , prototype, fracture.
But i know what u mean though i noticed a lot od 2's
Well 360 is not the only console with sequels.....DarknessLion
yes, but look at the Wii's lineup: VERY few sequels.
halo wars, Lips?, too human, dead space, mirror's edge, force unleashed, fracture, banjo kazooie, castle crashers, braid, legendary.kingobaid
Halo Wars and Banjo Kazooie are sequels. And What's Legendary?
Halo Wars isnt a sequel and its an RTS so thats pretty original, since their trying to come up with a great console RTS. and Banjo Kazooie looks like a completly different game becasue u can make ur own vechiles.
Legendary is a FPS where you unleash Pandora's Box and fight Griffins and such.
GameSpot has nothing to do with the originality of the games on the 360.--MAV3R1CK--
Very nice observation.
Probably the fact whenever something original comes out everyone has something to say about the flaws.
Here's a few games, all of them are good. Army of Two, The Darkness, Crackdown, Turok and Dark Sector.Strife88
I couldn't agree more, Strife.

They call it shovelware...that's not a good thing.
What are Wii's biggest sellers? Brawl, Kart, Zelda, Mario, Resident Evil...All...you guessed it, Sequels.
You have to stick with what works. If it was good enough for people to buy again, and they change enough to the game...why not? I'm willing to buy Gears2/Bioshock2, so I'd rather them make that then waste their time on some new game.
If they never made another Resident Evil, I'd probably give up on gaming. Glad Capcom isn't listening to you.

Faith? Why should developers make original games and have them sell like crap? I wish the 360 had more original games as well, but in the end of the day I don't really care, a good game is a good game.

Dunno if I'd have Dark Sector in a list of original games.
It's practically Gears with a new idea slapped on it. Even the buttons are the same...I don't wanna burst your bubble about Turok either, but that was a series sequel. Which I think is what he's talking about.
New IP's cost a lot more and are a very high risk so when you need cash you do a sequel. Maybe after a dev does #2, they'll have the cash for a new IP. Personally I can't wait for the 2nd Fable.
And please don't mention Wii games. Those games are just like the stuff I have to put up with on my DS. Junk.

Halo Wars is part of a franchise, as is Banjo Kazooie. Regardless of what genre they are, or what gameplay changes they have made, they are both existing franchises; therefore in at least one aspect in particular, they are unoriginal. However, I don't see what's wrong with sequels, as long as they improve on the gameplay. I'm looking forward to many future sequels as well as original games.

He's saying something new...a "reimagining" uh...yea because that's brand new Turok right there.
Dark Sector had a good story? You serious?
*clears throat"
Mass Effect, Bioshock, Castle Crashers, Lost Planet, Too Human, Saints Row, Overlord, Lost Odyssey, Assassin's Creed, Blue Dragon, Infinite Undiscovery, Last Remnant, Dead Rising, Viva Pinata, Army of Two, Crackdown, Puzzle Quest...
That's just off the top of my head...

you are wrong. Mariokart, Smash Bros, Zelda, Tomb Radier.
All sequels prequels etc.
Sequel does not always mean unoriginal. Look at Fable 2.
And to answer your question, lets see.
Crackdown, APB, Condemned, Dead Rising, Kane and Lynch, BioShock (does that count?), Mirror's Edge, Prototype, Left 4 Dead, and probably a few others that don't come to mind right now.

gamespot is secretly god, everyone knows that :D
It's simple economics. Original intellectual properties are extremely expensive to develop, and have no guarantee of success to recoup those development costs.
With a sequel to a successful game, there's a pretty good chance it will sell well and the development costs are lower. This is very important right now, because with the dawn of HD gaming dev costs are higher than ever before.
The same argument can be made for the movie industry, but as with the gaming industry the popularity and cost-effectiveness of sequels doesn't kill originality. Rather, it provides a regular source of income for companies that they can use to fund the development of relatively risky new IPs. Thus, sequels actually enhance originality, not harm it.
And as for the comment about the Wii having very few sequels, I'm afraid I can't agree. I have been a big Nintendo fan since the original NES in the 80s, but one of the things that bugs me most about the Big N is that every second game these days is either Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong or Metroid branded. I love all of these IPs, but there are times when I think I will go nuts if I see another game called Yoshi Cookie Decorating and Milk Dipping or something.
