In my day I had to beg and beg for years before my parents finally relented and, no not bought me but allowed me to buy my own Spectrum and black and white TV. This setup was then only allowed to be played in the lounge for 1 hour a night. Nowadays kids get all consoles, HDTVs, iPods, surround sound, yadda yadda yadda bought for them, and not even for their birthdays/xmas.

Because you were one of the rare kids that wanted to sit inside and play games rather than play ball like the other kids.  Now it is reversed and the only sports that kids want to play are expensive organised sports.

I saved up and bought mine myself:roll:

But you call parents buying their kids a 360, spoiling them:lol:
I think to spoil them with a game console, would be to buy them a PS3, and A FEW GAMES.

I purchased my own Xbox 360 and I wish I had parents who bought me stuff like that because then I would now be playing it on a sweet HDTV. I actually had no money left after I got my X360 with one game and needed to save up for the VGA cable so I can play it at least in a higher resolution then on SD. I also never get anything game related for my birthday and especially not Xmas. Not that it matters though I rather have other stuff for those events. And it makes sense, I'm 19 and about to move out.

Yeah I'm 16 and in my room I have 360 (bought it myself), CRT tv (21 inch Grandperents old on) and then a whole lot of books and a painting table for my models. I sometimes get bought things for good results at school etc but it works both ways.

I would have quoted you if I was talking to you...it was a post to the topic creator.  Parents back then were reluctant to buy game consoles for their kids because all the other parents were simply buying a bat or something and handing it to their kid.

well my parents bought 1/2 of mine for my Christmas Present. I only got a few clothes besides that. I don't have a HDTV or surround sound. So I don't think I'm spoiled.

How many of you people actually have gaming as an only hobby? Because if it was my only hobby I would have a lot better setup then I have now (X360 on monitor... that's it).

Actually, playing (electric) guitar sounds like a sweet hobby if you get good at it. I don't really want to start with it though, but I wanne be good at it :P If you know what I mean. Sounds like a great thing to do.

well its probably my only hobby, my dad owns about 20 acres of land, so in the summer I go down there and ride dirtbikes and I have my own car that I converted to a banger racer to race around in

but I'll have to get a new car, I wrecked it not long ago, Escort 1.6liter 16valves make good rally cars except when you shred 3 tires, break the CV boots, wear the clutch out, smash the exhaust off it, burst the radiator and put free petrol in it (especially when the petrol is 1/5 diesel) which clogs the fuel injection, oh and crash it into a 1973 landrover series3

i get where you're coming from completely. i have a 360, live, hdtv, hddvd drive, and games, all paid for by myself. i've been working at a law firm for a couple of years now (im 16), and now that i have a vehicle, i get good pay for being a runner. the only things ive recieved from my parents, other than food, clothing, etc., is my car and half of my car insurance a month (if i keep up a 4.0 and stay involved in a sport). None of these things were cheap, and i've learned to appreciate the value of a dollar and how to invest my money and make it grow because i have learned to manage money to where i can make it grow and eventually earn a lot. Low-risk investment and stock dividends basically bought my 23" HDTV. Now, I look at many other kids in my school and i think "they have everything handed to them, too bad for them" because they're the ones who will be leaning on their parents for the rest of their lives and will never go on to become independent and productive citizens. So I say, their loss and their parent's fault for spoiling them, get on with my life because if i whine about what other people have, i spend less time worrying about what I need to do.

yeah, my folks wouldn't buy games that were more than $20, and they wouldnt buy a system till it dropped below $100.  So, if i still depended on them, I still wouldn't be able to buy a PS2 since it's $129.99.   I got my N64 two months before the gamecube came out, for example.

Sounds like someone's jealous. Seriously, what do you care? Be proud you paid your own way even back then. Or maybe not, since your parents sound like real stinkers (no offense).

If people get stuff like this for their birthday, or for no reason. Then they are spoilt as hell. I saved up myself, and bought my HDTV, and got my 360 for christmas. Your parents sound evil, btw, if you bought the B&W t.v. but you had to play it in the livivnjg room, so your parents could watch it  I'm 14 btw, my birthdays in may. And yeah, i do have a job, i earn £40 a month, so thats about... $85?

My parents never bought me gaming consoles, unless it was Christmas. I didn't receive anything for my birthdays. Anyways, my parents bought me a brand new $23,000 vehicle when I graduated high school, because they wanted me to have a reliable vehicle for driving to college and back to my apartment in Pittsburgh every day. So I guess I could be considered spoiled, but I never asked for the vehicle. They also bought my sister a new vehicle when she graduated also.

Its the sign of the times. When I was in elementary school, it was a pain to convince my parents to buy an action figure or those NES cartridges. Now, I see kids with their parents go into gamestop and come out with a game or two. I think its both a social and economical product. First, people are generally making more money, even with inflation. I'm fresh out of college doing grad school and working part time, and I didnt think I'd be making enough to have extra on the side. But in a pleasant surprise, I'm taking care of it with enough left over to support the unending gaming habit. Second, people are having less kids and having them later in life when their financially established. This all equals more $$$ to spend on the kids. Thirds, video games have generally become a mainstream gift item for kids, where once they were seen as overly expensive. So count the future young gamers of the world lucky, who knows, maybe in a few years $1,000 consoles will be considered an expected reward for say, getting an A on your report card or cleaning your room...

I have to buy everything myself unless it's Christmas or my Birthday otherwise my parents don't get me a thing.xTheExploited
Yeah, me too. I am 15 and have bought my Wii, my Xbox and Xbox 360, about 30 of my 48 games I bought, my parents bought me my N64 when I was like 8 and my Gamecube when I was 11. But now they don't give me anything. I bought my own Skis, I work at a ski resort which grants me a free $600 pass to a crappy mountain, but its all we got, I also have to make my own money to pay for college and buy a car, I also have to vacuum or fold laundry or something just so I can eat. My neighbor is 16 and they got him a car, a wii, a 20 gig Ipod, and just bought him an $800 camera, he doesnt even have a job and gets whatever he wants!

It was up to your parents...your parents were very careful with you.  There are parents like that today.

It is mostly the kids who are ages 5-12 who get spoiled with these luxuries.  They are the one who whine and cry to get this stuff and way too many parents give in.  Im 16 and I do not know anyone who bought their own 360 except for one person who I know is spoiled rotten.  But I do agree that it is crazy all these parents willing to just shell out around $1000 just to get there son/daughter on the internet and have 4 controllers so they can be the cool kids.
