I have play midway and pacific now a little. It could be really fun but I think the balance is way off base. It "seems" like it takes forever to kill enemies but they can instantly crush you. I will just talk about a couple of things I have experienced.
-Air combat. The targeter that pops up to show how far ahead to shoot to actually hit your target is to tiny. Computer controled planes take down each other way faster than you can. And then to make matter worse the non-fighter planes have crap guns which means even if you do hit your target little damage is done. OOo what I really hate about planes is that they come in groups of 3+? but when you do a torpedo run or bombing run the idiots that are flying with you do not drop their payloads. So you have to switch back and forth between units to manually take over each fighter and drop its bomb but by then they are getting shot to pieces. Torpedo planes only get one shot which sucks. 3 torpedo's would be enough to kill most anything but since your wingmen dont fire theirs it usually takes 3+ freaking trips to sink something and thats if you dont miss.
-naval combat. You would think that you would have to lead a target on water to since its MOVING but apparently not. You just aim at stuff and fire directly. I forget about midway but the americans must have a range disadvantage against the japanese in pacific because my boats were always getting shelled before I could fire back and thats if they stayed and faught. And is it my imagination or does your artillery that is out of range suddenly start to work if you use the flak cannons to target ships?? Maybe its the flak cannons making that noise but it also sounds like your shooting artillery which further makes me mad because it doesnt do any damage when you do that. Alot of the time I had to chase stuff down for miles and miles and never close the distance and then get pissed off and use something else.
I think this game is to much rock-paper-scissorized...You have to use this type of unit against that one and this other type against that and blah blah blah. If you send the wrong type you get cut down easily. I mean most of the time you dont get options..
Here is my absolute most hated scenario though in the game. I painstakingly take the time to eliminate a carriers entire screen of escort ships so that it is alone(and should be ripe for the --------. But then it becomes Flak central and you cant get a single plane near it. Its not suppose to have that many flak cannons and it sure as hell isnt the fighter planes in its CAP shooting me down.
It was awesome that they put in Health regeneration in Pacific, I LOVED that. But they also gave it to the enemy...I HATE that even more. I actually land a torpedo on a destroyer or damage the crap out of it with my destroyer before i get sunk and then by the time i send in some bombers its healed completely like nothing ever happened.
The first couple of american missions in Pacific were really hard but at one point they just go really easy and I started to have fun. This game is something like I have always wanted, the skirmish mode especially where you can pick the scenario which include just straight up combat. But there is just something holding it back from being magical. I have no doubt versus battles would be awesome. I want to be able to earn upgrades for stuff that affects the player only. I want the forces to be more generic so nobody has advantages. I dont care about the world wars, I dont need a game based on them. I want upgrades for accuracy, damage, health, health regen, speed, ammo, and who knows what else. This is like a better version of the space battles in star wars battlefront but at the same time also crappier.
My secret wish is for Eidos to realize they have the engine and mechanics available to make an AWESOME KICK ASS pirate game!!!!!!!
