I don't understand why we can't choose what maps we want to play on. Also why can't there be an option to join games that are in lobby or games that have already started? By the way I'm not "crying" over this I'm just curious.

Well that was quick and thanks for the response. It's because MW2 has matchmaking not dedicated servers.

In a lot of PC dedicated server games, people choose the map they want and only play that map. So if you're a Ninja or a heavy camper, you'd pick a map that suited those needs. So you end up with certain maps being completely one sided. Also it doesn't suit matchmaking.
and why can't we be in party chat i all gametypes, I know infinity ward tried to stop cheating but to be honest it doesnt look like it worked out...
pompygxb
I believe it's because they want people to communicate more in certain gametypes.
[QUOTE="racerX10157"]You don't need dedicated servers to have a lobby system. Gears of War did it, Rainbow Six Vegas did it, and many other games as well. It's because MW2 has matchmaking not dedicated servers.

Let's not forget how awesome Gears 1 multiplayer was compared to Gears 2 multiplayer.:D

As for game type modes, Modern Warfare 2 has dozens you can chose from.
I use to hate matchmaking. But I'm really starting to love it, it allows for all the maps to be played, instead of only the top few, and dont forget ITS A BILLION times better waiting 10 minutes for everyone to join your game and everyone just sitting in a lobby, and lets not forget about you would need host to set up the game, meaning, which usually means the player that kills the host the most gets booted out! AND! it helps the cheating a bit, otherwise you would have set up games and leaderboard would be pretty much useless(even more useless then now) Matchmaking is a lot better, I found games like Rainbow 6 and Gears of War kind of ruined it for not adding it.mikel222222
I see your point, but I still have to go with what White_Sox said. I think consoles are great for a lot of things, but after getting back into CSS lately on my pc, I see why I really missed dedicated servers. IWnet is just so hackneyed most of the time. My favorite part of multiplayer games is putting my headset on and talking to people I play with. PC has a nice little community of players out there to have a good time. I grew weary of jumping into a random match on Xbox Live where half of the players might be 14 year old boys looking for the newest and most annoying glitch to exploit on a given map.
However it could be like Rainbow Six, seeing one player acts as the server (client server based), he could choose the map and you can join the game. Simples. I find myself joining lobby's with crap map, and quitting till I find a map I like.SaltyMeatballs
Yep, and that kills you on the leaderboards in MW 2, because it counts every quit (due to rage or not) as a loss, and you forfeit any match bonuses. Kind of a Catch 22 situation if you ask me: play this map you hate, or take a loss.
Because MW2 matchmaking is crap, just like CoD4's. How many times it pops you in a game with 30 seconds time left? How many times you exit a match because of bad connection and it slaps you back in there? They were lazy with this, I tell you. I hoped they'd make a Gears of War-like server browser with filters, but nooooo (note that GoW has no dedicated servers either).

Seriously, who cares about win/loss ratio? I only care about keeping my kill/death over 1.40, but even that is useless: it's a game and it should be played for fun... and laggy matches kill the fun for me, so I'd rather get my +1 loss ratio than half a dozen pills of lag-die.
I prefer matchmaking over game lobbies.
With games like Rainbow Six, Gears and Splinter Cell:CT, I only found myself playing one map, and I would always get booted the second I started killing the host too often or framed a 'h4x0r'.It also cuts the game preparation time considerably. I can't tell you how much time I've spent sitting in a game lobby as opposed to actually playing when using them. Also, why can't I join in the action right when I join? Instead I have to wait until the game ends.
Matchmaking in CoD is better for me: actual map rotation, not much time waiting between matches, and I can join in even if the game is underway.
What I think is funny is that party chat doesn't work but if you do regular chat it does... makes no sense

All I'm saying is that the entire system is crap and almost seems like it's designed to cause frustration for players and extra sleep for lazy-ass developers. I absolutely hate leaving a game, only to be thrown back into the SAME game by the matchmaking system. That's why I have pretty much switched back over to my pc shooters that still support dedicated servers (I'm looking at you, Counter Strike Source and Bad Company 2).
I think lobbies promotes better communities in games too. I've met some really cool people in Rainbow Six and Gears because I would continually play on their servers day in and day out. I knew that the connection and ping would always be good too. Never would have to stop in game to change hosts or something like that.
I know, I was speaking about matchmaking in general specifically Halo 3's system where you could be stuck playing Oddball matches when you clicked lone wolf.As for game type modes, Modern Warfare 2 has dozens you can chose from.

Man, let's not even get into how many times I have been propelled into absurd games through the halo matchmaking system. Plus, it seems to have something inherently against my NAT type, for some reason. No other game gives me crap for that, and my router shows everything as open. Grrr. I gave up on the n00bfest that is Halo multiplayer a long time ago.8)
I know, it sucks sometimes. They actually did patch it since launch and now all the weird games are kind of clumped into a group, but just the other day I was put into a game mode that I never even knew existed.Man, let's not even get into how many times I have been propelled into absurd games through the halo matchmaking system. Maybe this way is cheaper to implement or maybe to mantain?
Anyway I like how the map system works because this way I get to play almost every map and not the ones people like to play only (like what happened on RSV2).
Matchmaking works quite well in some games - like Modern Warfare 2.
Not so much in other games - ie Forza 3.
seankane
I gotta say the MW 2 matchmaking system is the worst in the recent batch of games. Almost every time you enter a lobby, the map switches or half the players suddenly leave a match. If you were able to pick a map, or even match settings, the multiplayer would graduate from the pleab level. Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 seem to matchmake pretty well so far on the 360. I still prefer total customization over my matches, a la the PC, but L4D's system is pretty good as well.

I think you're exaggerating a little bit. For one, who cares if the map changes? They're put in rotation so there's always a 1/17 chance of being any one map at any time(of course a little different depending on game type). And half the players leaving the match is the matchmaking system's fault, *how*?
I think its pretty clear that anybody can start up their Xbox360 and be playing online within a couple minutes or less, and its hard to complain about that, even if the first attempt to put you in a room doesn't work.
Anyways, letting people pick the map and match settings would not be matchmaking at all.
The point is that matchmaking has made it *super* easy for anybody to just be online in no-time. Thats a good thing, particularly when MW2 is pretty much just a casual arcade shooter. For the more 'serious' players, there's always the option of private matches, where you can pick the maps and the rules you like.
In a game like Forza 3, I'd prefer having control over the rules, but with MW2, I just want to jump on and start playing. There's plenty of different gametypes to choose from, and of the ones I like, the standard rules and the map rotation doesn't bother me one bit. And like people have said, it stops people from playing only on maps they like, or ones they're good at. I also like being forced to play maps that I dont tend to do as well on, cuz it makes me learn the map better.

There is NO playlist in Halo that allows you to only play straight-up free for all while online.

And this, this, is the reason I hate these new "innovative" matchmaking systems. It takes a little bit of hte human element out of MULTIPLAYER gaming over the Internet. He nailed it on the head.
I like the maps being random, I think it would be unchallenging if you could always play on your favorite level. MercifulKiller
Even knowing that there are dedicated servers on CSS that only host one map all day, every day? CSS has been around for over 10 years and counting now, and still has like 5,000 active servers on a given day. Coming from something like that, I will never be able to jump on board with these new "smart" matchmaking systems.
Here is some proof of a real matchmaking system for you 8)
have you not played battlefield? the same two maps over and over and over and over and over again :(

Which Battlefield are you talking about?
Anyways... I've always complained about the lazy multiplayer systems of today's online games. I miss the days of the Socom's on PS2. Dedicated servers... vote to kick... pre-game lobby... lots of options to pick your own maps and modes... you could create your own room with a password...
Me and 3 close friends of mine still play Socom 3 in a password room every wednesday night. It keeps out glitchers and and griefers, plus we can play with whatever maps and options we want. Today's "Matchmaking" systems just seem so dumbed down and are just a programming shortcut. It is really ridiculous in Bad Company (I hate to bash my favorite game of all time) when you finish a map and guys that you were playing against and getting pissed off about are now on your team, possibly even in your squad, lol. It doesn't make any sense.
PS:whats up craigalan and Madvybz... been a while since I've posted, lol

not the recent battlefields, sorry if i'm late on that, i'm talking about battlefield 2: modern combat, I hated the voting system cause the same 2 or I should say 2-3 maps would be chosen over and over again. :(
