some people dont want massive battles, they want a quick win...if you're playing an RTS, anticipate any outcome from your rival. some wait it out and build, others rush asap.

defence in RTS is your best friend

rushing is a tactic. granted i hate it as well, but you still gotta be able to counter it otherwise your opponent will take advantage of that weakness

No it isn't. The point of rts games is to beat your opponent, and a rush is very effective when done well. If both players want a large battle then you can play the way you want, but more often than not you will get rushed.

Because it's effective. The point of the RTS is to form the best strategy to beat your opponent. It is called real time STRATEGY. Rushing is an effective strategy often times. Which is why I went no further than Halo Wars with the genre.

annoys me as well... when i play against my friend, we made rushing against the rules... had to wait a certain amount of time to launch an attack etc...

what i used to do (if possible) is use my original City as a decoy and build another one somewhere else, put units at each city... so when they empty thier city to rush yours you send your 'non-decoy' to attack thiers as a counter attack... works best if thier stupid enough not to notice.

once thier city and builder units are dead, its usally an easy win after that.

it worked about 85% of the time.

i actually use decoys often in RTS...

That's why I always make sure I have a solid defense that can withstand an early rush. :) Rushing is a perfectly valid strategy though, I just recommend making sure you can come up with another strategy to make sure that it isn't an instant loss for you.

I never tend to rush because I always want to build up a big army or something and then attack.

Perhaps you should build better defenses then. Some poeple rush to catch you off guard for a quick win.

It's because you have nerds that are so obsessed with winning that they don't care about fun anymore. Also, people who are afraid of longer games where actually strategy might come into play love rushing too.

On Halo Wars, if that's what you're talking about, there's a good method of dealing with rushers. Basically if you get rushed, quit the game before you lose any units or buildings, and the rusher will get 0 points. Usually they will cry about it. This also saves time so that you can find a more skilled opponent.

rushing is a strategy, you just have to be prepared to defened against it. RTS does not stand for real time steamroller

wow are you serious? do you really think thats how rts games are played? leave when a rush is coming? maybe you just like longer games because you get to use stronger units. but rushing is so important to harass the enemy. only a noob would say that rts games are supposed to be played long and use all the units. rushing isnt for nerds just to clear that up, if your really skilled then you would be offensive and defensive at the same time. always be prepared and harassing is a key to having a competitive and enjoyable game.

Rushing is cheap, easy, and not fun. Anyone can do it, including me, but there's no point. ESPECIALLY in Halo Wars. It takes literally no skill to build 1000 warthogs and rush.

Well rushing is a valid tactic. But it's not one I tend not to use often. Unless I really need to. Such as super weapons and the like. I really like games where you don't actually build during combat. You prepare your units and defenses ahead of time. So if you loose it isn't because of being rushed it's because you didn't bring the right units to the table or you didn't use them well enough.

Two really good games like that are the "Total War" series or Starwars:Empire at war.

But if you really want to avoid getting rushed just do what I do and play online with people you know, that just want to play for fun. People on the matchmaking servers tend to be overly competitive jerkoffs that take the game way to seriously anyway.

Rushing is a tactic in good RTS to prepare for successive attacks if the rush fails. It's also meant to slow the other player down instead of playing his game he has to play defense & react to the rush while the rusher gets to build at will. Even the AI rushes but still builds a steady wave of army. Even in real life wars are often won by attacking the unprepared it's up to the player on defense if he can survive & win the war.
