You answered your own question. The native resolution for your new television is probably 1080P and running at any other resolution will result in sub par picture quality. Get an HDMI cable and prepare to be amazed.

I guarantee if I put an xbox running over hdmi next to one using component you couldn't tell a difference. Now, if you meant composite then I agree. So many people on here say how HDMI is so much better than component and they are full of it. Its nearly impossible to tell the difference.

And of course I only mean picture quality wise. Of course HDMI is more convenient, and that's why I use it.

I think post starter was using composite video, which on any HD TV, even a tube 480 TV would look bad. I agree, difference between Component and HDMI is negligible when gaming.

Difference between component and HDMI is usually negligible, but there is a difference. Sorry to burst your bubble but there's no reason to use components at all (other than the fact that they come with your 360 and HDMI doesn't). HDMI is superior in quality and it's simpler, you won't have a bunch of cables to run through your TV. And you're also talking about digital quality versus analog. Digital transfer is usually error free whereas analog will undergo information loss and degradation depending on several conditions. Of course you can still make arguments against HDMI, but the bottom line is it depends on your display device, how large it is, what you're playing, etc. Why stop at component? Just use HDMI. They're not expensive at all. And yeah I think the TC was talking about composite now that I think about it. So no wonder he's not getting good picture.

Go find me one CREDIBLE source that says HDMI is definitively better than component for video quality. Guess what, you cant. The whole "its digital so automatically better" argument has been debunked many, many times. I would post some sources but I simply don't need to. Just do a google search and see for yourself. No credible source will suggest otherwise.

@KiLLa187ScriLLa Are you still using the Standard video output (Yellow) plug or the component HD outputs (Red, Green Blue)?

Ok I will be the first to tell you an hdmi cable doesn't need to run you more than a couple of bucks. Buy one on Amazon for 5 cents (with $2.50 shipping) and hook that baby up by the weekend.

Get an HDMI cable and set your XBox display settings to the highest resolution your TV supports-- it should be 720p or 1080p.

Exactly the point I made earlier. There's no need to get all high and mighty about component (I'm looking at you gooter) when a standard HDMI cable is usually around 3$ with free shipping or a few cents with 2$ shipping. If you're going to invest in a big HDTV then why not get it fully digital? I don't know why some people prefer component. If you have the option to go with HDMI, go with that.

Usually it's the HDMI guys that are high and mighty when comparing the two. And that was gooter's point. Before when the component HD cables were standard with Pro and Elite models, the HDMI fanboys would go on about how much better the quality was. I don't deny that the quality of HDMI is no doubt better, but it is not such a drastic leap that it would be instantly noticeable by 95% of people out there.

Not at all, the question here is why not use HDMI? I'm not trying to stick up for it so much as wonder why you would purposely choose to avoid it? It's much nicer to have a single cable that undoubtedly offers higher quality, whether noticeable or not, than have a bunch of component wires in the back of your TV. It's not my business though.. I simply stated my opinion and I got attacked for it because gooter seems to like component better. Idk.. like I said it's not my business. I'm happy with my setup.

The point is, and I believe it was the point that gooter was trying to make, that if you already have the 360's Component HD cables (that were once standard for Pro and Elites), it may not be absolutely necessary to upgrade to HDMI. I'm not saying you should deny yourself HDMI for any reason, just that if you already have Component HD, you may not feel the need to spend the extra money on an HDMI cable because the difference is pretty negligible in most people's eyes.

You consider that "being attacked"? Geez, you don't get out much do you? I actually prefer, and only use, HDMI. All I said is that the video quality is not necessarily better with HDMI, which is what you claimed by saying that HDMI is a far superior format and there is a difference. Which, as Ive said, is not true. I use HDMI because it will do both digital audio and video in one cable. I have one cable going from my receiver to the TV and then one from each device into the receiver.

Well, I use component combined with optical and my TV does 1080p with 5.1 surround, so I'm happy. Yeah I could swap it out for a single HDMI, but why bother? The cables can't be seen and it frees up on of my HDMI inputs for something else.

In most instances an HDMI cable will look better then component. This is not due to how the signal is transferred but how modern TVs interpret it. Finally if anything, the ideal environment has you running you signal through your receiver and if you want that rocking lossless audio HDMI is needed. If anything even with both connection types I would simply go HDMI as it provides an upgrade path option.

You obviously never sat infront of a competent Plasam, so your opinion is garbage. Don't even say how you went to a friends house yada yada all that other BS to justify your idiotic statement.

I'm guessing TC is using composite cables. (not even HD cables) Since Xbox's stop being sold with HD cables about 2 years back this is most likely. Also when it comes to Plasmas: Panasonic>>>Samsung. Pepople spend all this money and then don't know what the hell to do with it or hook it up proprerly. A little research and they would'nt have problems.

Meh, HDMI is nice but if his 360 looks better on his SDTV than a HDTV, I think the issue is one of these things:

  1. You're using the composite (yellow) cable rather than the component (red, green and blue) cable
  2. You're using component but you didn't change your 360 to an HD resolution
  3. You didn't flick the HDTV slider on the cable
  4. Your HDTV and/or 360 is broken

1-3 are probably the most likely culprit.
