I doubt they ever make a portable system. WAY too much competition.KC_HokieI agree, but I bet they could do it if they wanted to.
The ability to buy Xbox Live marketplace items for your Xbox 360 and/or Window PC via your cell phone isn't the same as a handheld gaming system. They'e making one, it's called the Windows 7 lines of phones
Handheld gaming is dying and it doesn't make sense to introduce new hardware that wont do everything
Microsoft is going to have the new phones that tie in with the 360 and you'll see that grow

Forgive me if I'm wrong but isn't the DS one of the most successful consoles (not just handhelds) EVER.
Along with the upcoming DS I'm pretty sure it is and will continue to be alive and well.

The DS has sold well, but portables combined still can't match consoles combined in terms of total sales.[QUOTE="balfe1990"][QUOTE="Jaysonguy"]

The DS alone has sold nearly TWICE as much as the Xbox AND the PS3. Check worldwide sales figures

Total sale of consoles (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PS2) staring 2008: 118 million......Total sales of handhelds starting 2008: 93 million That 25 million more consoles sold during that time than handhelds.I doubt they ever make a portable system. WAY too much competition.KC_HokieI don't see how there is any more competition than home consoles.
[QUOTE="KC_Hokie"]I doubt they ever make a portable system. WAY too much competition.The_Weird_GuyI don't see how there is any more competition than home consoles.Because there is a much smaller market worldwide for handhelds than consoles. Starting in 2008 consoles have outsold handhelds by over 20% (see numbers in post above).

I thought it was a given around here that its irrelevant now. We might as well include Dreamcast and Xbox 1 sales then.
And plus as of Dec. 09 the DS has sold 131 millionalone, I don't know where you got that combined figure.
131 million sales, which is going to be rocketed by the 3DS is a clear indication that handheld gaming is just fine. And thats just the DS. The PSP has sold what, 60 million units?
C'mon are we really counting the PS2? I thought it was a given around here that its irrelevant now. We might as well include Dreamcast and Xbox 1 sales then.Over 14 million PS2's have sold starting in 2008 so yes that counts just like any handheld sold during that time. And it doesn't matter if you start with 2009, 2008, 2007 or 2006 the results are the same. Consoles sales combined trump handhelds by at least 20% regardless of when you start counting. And plus as of Dec. 09 the DS has sold 131 millionalone, I don't know where you got that combined figure.

Okay, say we disregard all of this, would you still agree that handheld gaming is in trouble or "dying"?

That's just the start
Soon it will have games and keep everything tied to the gamertag
Handheld games spiked and are currently crashing, the "one trick pony" device was great but it's primarily aimed at children and that limits what can be done with it.
Now a cell has a much larger demographic and it's something people are taking with them everywhere. If you give people a phone plus a chat client plus an email system plus gaming you're hitting people from all angles.
Microsoft was smart, they knew that the handheld market was saturated and that it had a very small demographic, they've been interested in targeting users from the start and the way to do that is with an all in one phone.
They might have a few arcade like games for Microsoft cell phones but I highly doubt they develop any games. Microsoft will never come out with any sort of handheld gaming system though. KC_Hokie
Well that "other" phone is getting quite a few games and it's "fruit" store is always busy with games
I see that as the direction that Microsoft is going, there's a much bigger userbase there
