I don't get it. I loved that game. Innovative gameplay. Sweet physics. I don't see why the game isn't liked by Gamespot eh? It got a 6-something out of 10 and can't see why. Just rented it off gamefly and beat it. Anyone wondering?
Graphics are crappy, gameplay is boring, shooting down planes is not the least bit satisfying. The demo has ANNOYING voice acting...oh, the graphics are so bad.
I think the Desert Recon mission is probably most responsible for the poor reviews this game has received.
As far as graphics go, I think there is some confusion between what is considered poor graphics and what the designers were trying to accomplish with the game, which is a semblance of what occurs when flying a real fighter plane.
For example, because of the effects of centrifugal acceleration, specifically hypoxia, which amounts to dizziness and loss of vision because of poor blood flow to the head due to speed of flight, a pilot's vision will become blury and eventually, if the centrifugal force is too great for too long, the pilot is going to black out.
Also, experienced pilots, particularly fighter pilots, will refer to tunnel vision, which amounts to seeing only a specific target in the center of vision clearly, the periphery being basically a blur.
For better or worse, that is what the designers tried to simulate, which is why the graphics appear to be poor when certain actions are happening, such as extended tight turns or long direct flights at full speed.
Simulation aside, while the graphics are not as good as say Perfect Dark Zero or Gears of War, they are not that bad.
