Please explain the hype.

I tried co-op story mode and split screen multiplayer at a friends house.

both seemed average

why so popular. does it have a killer online like cod4?

thanks

just b/c a game is popular doesn't mean you'll like it, you didn't like gears, simple as that.

I don't why you didn't like it. Maybe its not your taste. I think its the best shooter around with the best controls, cover system, and art style. But you don't have to agree.

for me its the multiplayer, its not like others where there is 30 people in the same game, its more personal. you can see peoples skills alot better.

It was Xbox 360's first killer app. It's so popular b/c it was the 360's first great game. There was no shooter quite like it.

Art style?

Gears of war became popular because it had some nice new graphics and a new good coversystem.

I had the same experience with gears as TC and ive intruduced the game to some friends to and they also just said meh.

Its an okay fun action game, but it gets extremely repatitive and it has no real story and no likeable characters, all just cliched macho dudes.

I loved the game. The gameplay is sick and I enjoy the story mode. I'm not really into the online because i am a noob.

I don't know if I would call Gears the Xbox's first killer app, Oblivion was very well received six months earlier and provided the same level of improvement in the RPG department that Gears did for tactical shooters. As for the game the core mechanics are fantastic (graphics, gunplay, cover system) but I thought the lame story (they don't even explain the Locust) and short single player mode were reason enough to mark it down. To me it is a solid, though not exceptional title. The heavy hand of Microsoft wanting to force the game out to stores before Epic was ready can really be felt.

Unlike, COD 4, Gears of War is not something someone can just pick up and be good at. If you played split screen multiplayer, chances are, you got slaughtered and it probably wasn't fun. Once you learn the mechanics of the game, the gameplay is addictive because of the simple controls, but deep tactical strategy. In order to be successful, the game forces you to work with your team. Working with a team of four can be very rewarding. Is your team gonna go for the easy kill boomshot with only 2 shots, or take the sniper rifle and with a good shot take out anybody from afar. Now if 3 enemies go for the boomshot, and only one of you go to the boomshot, there's many scenarios. Maybe they'll send a guy out to flank you, but either way, you are going to die unless you get to the boom first but you then you'll probably be downed by lancer fire, and next time around, you'll tell your buddies to go boom. This is what I love about Gears of War, and this is why it's so fun to play with friends.

Maybe so but I think Marcus is the most badass character ever. I dunno I find multiplayer addictive.

It's first great games were Call of Duty 2, Kameo(imo), and Oblivion.

Cover system, a chainsaw bayonet, the Cole Train, the Hammer of Dawn, the chainsaw bayonet, it's a third-person shooter, the chainsaw bayonet, it's good and gory, and it's still popular even after almost 2 years. Plus, it has a chainsaw bayonet.

It shows skill rather then run and gun when you kill someone you feel you won a battle as in halo 3 when i kill 20+ people a game i feel nothing but a small small small victory that means nothing. It's hard to explain but even my ps3 fanboy cousin agree's gears of war is one of the most challanging skill wise games out there.

meh. its not for everybody. its frustrating at times online, but fun when you get the hang of it. Host advantages suck though. Gears 2 won't have it though! yay.

If you dont like it, then dont play it.

Just because a game is popular by generic society, doesnt mean that its going to be liked by the individual of society.

it was the first very good AAA game of next gen if you ask me besides oblivion thats why it was and is so hot. you have to renember that gears is quite old now it came out in 2006 so it may not seem as great now but when it first came out it was just amazing.
